Ok that’s what I thought. I have tried that and it doesn’t want to stay put. Am I doing something wrong?

Yes, they do. On the right hand side of the dash support there should be a little handle that will flip up and down. You hold down the brake pedals with your foot and flip that lever down=this should lock the pedals in place holding the brakes on. To release, flip the lever back up and then give the brake pedals a little stomp with your foot and they should release and come back up.

Also do these tractors have a parking brake? If so how do I set it? I haven’t been able to figure that out yet

Ok good to know. I am curious if anyone else can confirm the line on the dipstick? My tractor will not see a lot of hard work here. I mostly plan to use it for grading the driveway, mowing, and drilling post holes. According to the dash it only has about 2400 hours on it

Will do. I just changed the engine oil today. Coolant looks like it’s low and hydraulic oil was low. I can’t figure out the transmission dipstick. There is cross hatching at the bottom of the stick and about a half inch above that there is a line. Is the line the full mark? Currently it is at the top of the cross hatch section so I figure that’s safe

Just keep an eye on all fluid levels. Radiator and engine oil every day you use it. Don't want to mess up a good thing.

Hey guys been a while since I’ve been on here. We’ve had a lot of house projects that have taken priority over the tractor unfortunately. At any rate I have great news, the tractor is running! I ordered a carb kit online about three weeks ago. It took over a week to show up, when it did I pulled the gasket out and it was about half the size it needed to be. So I went back online and found the right kit and I was finally able to rebuild the carb today. Got everything installed and she runs great! I am ecstatic that it’s finally running, that means the to do list just got longer. Now it’s time to grade the driveway, pull stumps, tear up the old cracked patio, etc., etc. Thanks so much to everyone on this forum who provided input to help get this beast running. I’m sure I’ll have plenty more questions as I get to use it and I’ll post some more pictures soon

So I finally got some time to mess around with the tractor. I pulled the plugs last week and noticed some rust on the ends of a couple plugs so I suspected the engine was seized. I sprayed some penetrating oil in the cylinders and let it sit for a couple days. Then sprayed some more and then some more. I hooked up a battery and after bumping the starter a few times it broke loose! So we sprayed some carb clean in the intake and it will fire! So good news is the tractor should run. I ordered a rebuild kit for the carb and I’ll be changing the oil and plugs soon. What oil and plugs are the best to use?

Thanks for the info sounds like there could be some good resources close by! I had that thought also. I will be pulling the starter to see if I can turn it by the flywheel probably this weekend. It’s been a little too cold the past couple days

One way or another I would want to be certain the engine was free before I tried to make it run.

I don't think you have air conditioning. Is there a compressor under the hood?

Welcome to the forum! I'm about 20 miles or less south of you, west of Niwot. You are quite close to Francis Banderet, who used to be the AC dealer in Commence City, now has Flatiron Equipment, 8127 W I 25 frontage road a bit north of highway 52. He has several AC's around his place, used to have some at 287 and the road into Berthoud. I wonder if you can reach the flywheel easily and try moving it with a big screwdriver, just to make sure the engine isn't locked up.

I have tried two different car batteries and the same thing happens when I try to start. I turn the key on, push the button and I can hear the starter click like it’s trying to engage. I tried bypassing the solenoid and same thing. It seems to me like it could be binding up. I am positive it’s in neutral. I was going to try to turn the engine by hand but it doesn’t look like there’s any room to get a ratchet in there unless you remove the radiator. Any thoughts? I guess I could pull the starter and see if it turns while it’s out

any chance you are using the key to start it? You have to push the button to engage the starter. Good luck and hope this helps.

That is one nice looking first series 190 AND WITH AIR! If it has the original PTO engaging lever you will hate that part. I think you can upgrade to the longer lever style pretty easily.

You said it sat outside for 7 or 8 years could it have possibly gotten water down the exhaust and engine seized up.

Bad solenoid is a symptom of a weak battery. If you want to see if it will roll over, take any good car battery, and hook it up temporary, The bigger the battery, the better, of course, just make sure it is good, and fully charged...

Starter could be dragging? But I’d guess that if it’s clicking, it needs a better ground(negative contact) and/ or your battery(s) have a low cranking load? Try using your vehicle to jump the tractor battery(s) as you try starting it. If that starts it then your ground is ok, but tractor battery is not.

The click, could be the starter solenoid. You can jump across the solenoid (bypassing it you must be sure it's in neutral) to find out if the starter still works. If the solenoid isn't chattering when you try to start it, you may not be getting power to it. I think there is a safety switch on the clutch? If so, it has to be made' to put power to the solenoid. The shiney part in the pic below, is the solenoid.

Good job finding it! It’s a 1965, series one(I). Heres the serial numbers per years. You might try cleaning beyond the 6417 to see if it is a “XT” &/or “D”.
Series I 1964 1001-2484, 1965 2485-8218, 1966 8219-8626. 9004-13272(TI) 1967 13273-17784,19001-19261II 1968 19262-22153,23001-23233III 1969 23234-25900, 1970 25901-29135, 1971 29136-31056, 1972 31057-31117, 1973 31118-31140 Edited by AC7060IL - 11 Apr 2020 at 5:01pm |

So I’ve replaced the fuel lines and fuel filter. Before filling it I wanted to see if I could get it to turn over. I threw a battery in and still can’t get it to crank. When I turn the key and hit the button you hear it click and then a buzzing sound. After a couple tries now it does nothing at all. The cables and connections seem to be in good shape, so do I have a bad starter?

Yes we are south of 34 but closer to the south end of Carter lake. I try to avoid I25 as much as possible lol. I was able to find the serial number right behind the bucket arm like you said. Here is a picture very hard to see but it says 190 6417. How do I read it? Does it mean I have a 64?
