help needed, is it normal for a wd to tear up a starter? this is the third starter, The first one broke the nose cone. The second was the drive spring and just now the nose cone and twisted off the armature shaft..is my timing at fault

It sounds like to me either the engine is kicking back ,to tight or its being lugged down to the point of dieing and rolling backwards or the hold down bolt is loose.

This has always happened when the engine kicks back.I have been looking for that adjective to describe what it did,(brainey) The motor has roughly 200 hours on a major.

Do you have a 6 volt starter on a 12 volt battery? that would be a good commbination to fly apart when the engine kicks.

Only difference in 6v and 12v in a starter for a WD is the winding!! They both use the same nose, bendix, and sping!!!
You have a timing problem...

Pull the distributor cap and the rotor, the shaft under the rotor is hollow and has a felt wick in it. Oil that wick, it oils the spark retard assembly. In this case check that assembly because it is stuck it the run position, which causes the engine to kick when starting and brakes the starter.
