I had a 78 L2 with the big motor and L3 cleaning shoes. It was a heckova machine, probably equal to an R52 with the upgrades that my AC mechanic and I had done. I think it would make you an excellent machine, given it is in the shape the picture shows. They are pretty simple to keep running. Might be a real bargain in todays market!

Looks like 30.5 drive tires and those luggers on the rear will for sure take you through a lot of mud, (like standing water)even if it doesn't have a mud hog drive.

I wonder if those hrs. are seperator or engine? Should have two tachs. Anyway, main shaft bearings would be the first thing i'd check.  The hrs. are about right that they may need attention. I always felt my L2 did just as well in corn as an R50 or R52.

I bought an 84 L3 with 6-30, 4-38 and 315 with 3500 engine hours for $7700 in spring 2010.  Being out of season and seller had a poor reputation for maintenance hurt it's value.  However, he only owned it 2 years and prior owner was type "A" about maintenance so I took a chance on it.

Ran it through dealer's shop and put about $13K into everything.  Corn heads needed very little.  Bean head needed complete rebuild - cutterbar, reel, pan under auger, skid shoes!  Needed cylinder bars and concave, so I put in a St. John's Welding enclosed cylinder with wide-spaced rasps and 9-bar concave ($4500 more). Worked excellent in corn and beans last fall and oats last week.

From my experience, check main and idler bearings (for electric clutches).  Check unloading tube and swivel.  Check metal sheet under separator raddle (likes to crack in the corners).  Check wood block bearings for walkers.  Get the bean head up in the air and see how it looks (rock damage?).

Also, from the photo that would be an earlier cornhead, so it may or may not have the floating bevel gears for the stalk rolls.  It will also have the short/stubby divider point tinwork, as opposed to the later heads that were about 6" longer.

It looks to me like it is only 2wd.  The rear hubs dont look like 4wd to me.  It does look pretty clean to me though.  I am not a big fan of the series 3 headers.  The one we had was nothing but trouble in short beans.  Down here, a lot of people seem to think their L2s are worth 10-15k, and I would put that combine in that price range.  If it is actually only 2wd, that hurts its value quite a bit in my opinion.

Check bottom clean grain auger, also check clean grain elevater for wear on the sides. Get in the grain  hopper and check the auger and floor under it. If they let you start  and run the machine check for any vibrations (like from the chopper). Should make you a fine machine.. Just a guess, maybe around 10k..

If the hours are engine and it runs good (have someone engage the threshing and run full speed while you walk around & listen) I think $10,000 would be towards the low end for a late L3.  If I needed it and it came from a good home I wouldn't think twice about $15K.  We ran an '80 L2 and I loved that machine, the only thing I would have changed would be a heavier rear end.  Had to be careful turning on ends with gullys but what else is new.  Just my .02,  Good luck!

If it's had major work done to it like cylinder bars, cleangrain auger/elevator, unloading auger swivel, bearings things like that I'd put it at $20,000 or maybe more. If it just a used combine with no maintenance records but looks good then half that.

There not making any more of them...It looks clean from the pic, but unable to do a close inspection I'd say 12-15 k. Is it a hydro? I didnt see that anywhere. If it is its worth more, makes a very good combine better. Those tires are worth a small fortune.  As far as the headers, I dont have a clue. Check the bars, theyre not cheap. Good luck, Trev.

Its already got the silver rims so it was just afew serial numbers away from getting the green stripe decals. It looks really great. There are allot of things to look at that affect price. If it runs as good as it looks, I would say around $15,000.  Just me thinking out loud. Ryan

WOW.  L3s will go for $5000 all day long in SD. Heads usually go for 10 cents a pound.
Getting tough to get a N series over $10,000. Different places ,different prices.

Here is a link to the auction info:

http://www.siefkerauctions.com/aa-auctions.htm?az_feed_pos=http%3A//www.auctionzip.com/cgi-bin/auctionview.cgi%3Flid%3D1207583%26feed%3D129%26group%3D0%26state%3D%26kwd%3D%26zip%3D%26category%3D0%26nojava%3D0

....primarily IH stuff, but that L3 sure does look nice. There are several more pics of the Gleaner and the corn and grain heads if you scroll down through the pictures on the auction link site.

I thought silver wheels came with the green stripe and purple (gun metal blue) cab and chassis?  Were each of the color changes made gradually?  First time I have seen them mixed and matched.  I always assumed the wheels had been changed when I saw silver wheels on a older Gleaner.

If you look at the auction bill it says that it's a hydro. All the pics of the machinery look like it's clean stuff.

I'm correct on this one Ryan. I dont have the serial number anymore, but it was badged Deutz-Allis it was green stripe with silver wheels. It had a KHD badge in the steering wheel. It had just about every option that they came with except Hydro. I think it was a Corn/Soybean Special decal on the hopper, which was unusual for these parts. It was an 1986 model that my dad bought new in late 1987, for $77000 including 13 foot header with a Victory super 8 pickup. He also got a new 24 foot straight header as our 22 header would not connect up without some modifications to the hydraulic connector. It had the floating feeder beater. It also came with the floating header option. We had trouble with the knife breaking for about 2 harvests until I figured out the pitman arm had been assembled upside down. We welded it closed and remilled it, never had trouble again. IT WAS NOT HYDRO, but he bought it anyways because it was a smoking deal. They wanted to sell him a rotary, he wouldnt have it. The 301 had lots of power, it was a really nice machine had a lot more capacity than the M2 it replaced...

Indeed, I remember seeing a green stripe L3 on an auction lot several years ago, in Ohio. I climbed into the cab to check it out, and I remember it being a gear drive, not hydro.

I was there.  Also had Duetz-Allis at top of cab along with silver wheels but no green stripe.  Had 24xx engine hrs.  No sep. meter.  Had lots of stuff wrote on sides of combine like what shafts drive what etc.  Also when ever they changed a bearing they wrote the date next to it on the combine.  Unload auger was replaced, had liner in bin floor.

L3 $28000
320 $6000
corn head $4000

3788 $26000 went to Kansas City
1 owner 1086 2100hrs. $29000
1086 3400 hrs. $24500 also going to KC
1086 4400hrs. $18000 going to Bowling Green KY
1 owner 706 3070 hrs. $6600
706 with sprayer $8800
AC 2000 mono-frame 4 bottom with add-on and extra parts brought $850, it was nice, but here plow price usually follows scrap price.
