Old 7016 Simplicity. What is procedure to get cross shaft out? Down to bare shafts sticking out and don't know how to get snapring out of gear.

That shaft he slipped in is larger dia where it shoulders gear. Mine has a wire ring. Looks like just drive shaft out of gear. I have a broken tooth gear box in running tractor and "good" gear box in parts tractor. The good box has a bad keyway on through shaft. The bad box has good through shaft. I thought I 'd just switch shafts but don't know the procedure

The ring is a pain in but you just work it out with a pick. Usually gets bent and should be replaced. And should not have to drive gear. The ring is what holds it. There was different shafts. Depends on whether it was a gear shift or hydro or variable speed.
