     No milk toast but mom made what I remember as really good corn bread we ate with milk and sugar for breakfast and lunches sometimes. Can remember a neighbor having cornmeal mush for supper a couple of times when I was over hanging out with their son when I was about 10 yrs. old. Sometimes we didn't have a lot of fancy food but we always got filled up.
     Do you have a milk toast recipe?

Two pieces of toast no butter broken in pieces in a bowl. Pour hot milk over it and add cinnamon and sugar.

Mom sliced leftover biscuits in half, toasted them and poured warm milk over them with a little salt and pepper. We didn't waste any food. Still enjoy some every now and then.

oh i remember as a kid i would watch the saturday night fights with my grandpa and granny would fix us a snack of crumbled up cornbread in a big water glass with butter milk poured over it,,,,mmmmmm,,,,i still love it today,,,,makes me some fried corn bread in a cast iron skillet and a big jug of butter milk,,,,,best snack in the world 

i still member that old tv,,,,,man how they have changed,,,,,little round tube in a small cabinet ,,,,,,sheeeesh ,,,,now they cover the whole wall,,,,lol

ahhh them was the good ol days for sure

If one of us kids on the farm complained of a sore throat so bad it was hard to swallow, milk toast was all you could get down sometimes. Toasted good and crisp, milk poured over it on a dinner plate.
Usually followed by "now get your a$$ on that school bus, or get to the barn" . . . .

Moms warm cornbread, buttered and then honey over it.


We would take dry cake and put it in a bowl and add cold milk.

Milk toast was Mom & Dad’s go to for anyone with Mumps. Those mumps made it difficult to chew & swallow normal food.

Of course the toasters back then seemed to have one setting - burnt!! Many a breakfast mornings, my brothers & I could be found scraping burnt toast into the trash can. Yeah, it might burn, but like others have said, “nothing was wasted.”

All bread heels, stale bread, etc went into bread puddin, wif raisins, cinnamon, sugar and shredded coconut.  Man that was breakfast or dessert worth fightin over...Wink

Granny just puts untoasted bread in a big glass and added a little sugar, then cold milk. we ate that a lot! I sti;; toast sum bread, butter it, then sprinkle with cimminum and suger mix.

we used to make milk gravy with boiled egg whites in it and serve it over toast or biscuits and then shred the boiled egg yellows over that.

Yes we too did the boiled egg gravy thing... ... and another variation, mom would put a slice / hunk of ham in a big skillet (cast iron of course) and get it warm, brown it a little to let the flavor out then pour the milk in with the ham and we would have sop bread.   Have not had that for a loooooong time. maybe I need to try and repeat it.

Use to fix a double batch of Corn Meal mush - tggggggggggggggg (cat on keyboard)
Eat part for breakfast - then put leftover into a load pan and put in frig 
Next day slice off section of loaf and fry it crisp on outside , syrup over it and it became a full different meal . 
  Now when I was in the Navy they served grits every morning at chow . 
Them southern guys would get all upset when I put them in a bowl , put milk and sugar on them and ate them like corn meal mush .

My mom made "Indian Bread" which is probably politically incorrect now so I just call it fried bread dough. Throw some homemade strawberry or raspberry jelly on it, yummm!

Wife and kids don't like it as much as I did so doesn't get made much anymore in our household.
