I have to make a 4+ hour trip to attend my daughter's wedding Friday. On the way back Saturday, I'm going to make a 10-20 mile detour to look at a 1946 A/C B and attachments that are for sale. Here's the list of what he's got:
'46 B with attachments for sale. The tractor is in good condition. It would restore easily. It has a disc, drag, one bottom plow, back blade and broken but fixable bush hog. All the tires are in like new condition. The tractor is a 6 volt push button start. It runs well.
Any advice on what to look out for & what this package could be worth is appreciated. Edited by Protrucker - 12 May 2011 at 7:41am |

Look out for loose wheel on the rear axel. Expensive to fix.

Sounds like a nice package.
Check the front axle pivot to see how worn it is. Gives you some indication of the amount of time on the unit. Agree on the rear axle, push/pull each rear wheel in and out to see of it has movement. |

Look for excessive play in the steering wheel. Fixable but detracts from value.

OK, thanks.
Look for loose rear wheels, slop in the front axle pivot & steering wheel. Anything else?
I know there are a lot of variables, but how about a ballpark value for the package?
Does $1500 - $2000 sound reasonable?

Just bought 2 B models this past week, a 42 mod running great, and a 46 mod that needs a little engine work, not much, but some, Looking forward to "playing" with these little "fellers"......

Sounds like a very good group of equipment along with a running B. Hope it works out. I would think if you could get all that for $ 1500 - $ 2000 you have a great buy.
Take good care of my favorate.
Good Luck!

Well, I went to see it and it's in pretty nice shape. The things That I noticed that needs attention are: • battery box is rusted badly • steering wheel should be replaced • exhaust stack is loose • right rear wheel moves slightly on axle • starter sounds like it has trouble engaging sometimes • left brake not working The good: • starts (electric & hand crank) and runs good (no smoke) • nice tin (no dents or bad rust) • rear tires are almost new • front tires are very good • seat is like new • lot's of attachments: original single bottom plow pull behind double disc's woods 3-pt back blade single section spring harrow
We agreed on a price of $1750 for everything & I offered a deposit, but my word and a handshake was enough for him. Now, I've got to find a trailer or make arrangements to have it hauled home.
I tried to post pic's, but tinypic.com isn't working for me now. I try to upload a pic & it's security code never shows up for me to type it in to upload. I'll post pic's when I can.

I would pay for it pronto before $1850 comes along. I'm just sayin' better safe than sorry. Does it have a 3pt. conversion? Sounds like you got a great deal.

Starter sounds like it has trouble engaging sometimes? Sounds like to me that the ring gear is about shot. might have to break it in half and fix it some day. I passed up a good running C the other day because of this and it was only 900 dollars.

If the starter ring was flipped, you will get a grinding noise in the starter until the ring wears down some so it seats properly. My 48 C does this from time to time when I start it.

Looks pretty nice - good tin! Tires look decent, too. Looks like you got a pretty good deal.
I like that solenoid - I've been thinking about doing that to my C as the wife has problems starting it with the rod.
cheers,
Creek

I replaced the wheel bearings and seals on my CA about 5 years ago and didn't cost all that much. Would a B be any different for cost?

His problem with a loose wheel is not a bearing, it is a worn spline on axek and in wheel.

Sounds and looks like a great deal. Unless you are working it hard, I wouldn't worry about the wheel looseness much.

I think you did very well. Now hustle over and close the deal before he finds another buyer who will go you a few dollars better.

I just spent most of the day trying to locate a trailer to haul my new purchase home. The tractor is about 123 miles from here. If I could find someone to haul it for me without costing me 1/3 to 1/2 of the cost of a trailer, I'd do that. I'm almost ready to buy a brand new 7000 GVWR trailer for between $2500-$3000, but I really didn't want to spend that kind of money right now. I've got a lot going out already, between the new tractor purchase & the money I've been spending on remodeling the house.

I did check into renting a trailer. No one around here (even U-haul) has an equipment trailer to rent. I'm probably going to end up buying one. Then I'll be able to haul the tractor & anything else that I want without the hassle again.
Heh.....with the price of scrap metal right now, I might try picking up scrap vehicles & other scrap metal to help pay for the trailer.

I know metal is high right now but the price you quoted for a new trailer sound to me a bit high. It could just be the location but I would check craigs list first

The price of steel is up, so cost of trailers made out of steel is up too.
I did quite a bit of looking around & pricing on the internet today. The same trailer that I'm looking at getting locally was quoted at $800 more down in Mechanicsburg, PA.

Just a thought. If you mentioned to uhaul that you wanted to haul a tractor they would naturally say they don't have one. I believe there car trailers will work just fine. So you call them and tell them you need to haul a Geo and see what they say unless you really need a trailer.

An Allis B will fit on a 6' open trailer, but you cannot tell U-Haul that you are hauling a tractor. Manure, large appliances to the dump, furniture... anything but a tractor... I think they even have a clause in the contract about it... |
