my grandfather on the D17 chopping with a 717. he then bought a D19 to chop with and used the D17 to pack trench. these are pre '76 because that's the year dad put the big silo up. then came the 190xt. the table blower and false end gate wagons left and were replaced with a badger blower and wagons....

Great pictures guys. Love the old chopping silage pictures.

You had me fooled too Chris. I thought had to be the shiniest moldboards I'd ever seen!

Does the fender upgrade make that a D170? It looks good with those fenders actually and I bet the lights come in really handy.

Dan D,
Great videos, is that your Dad? I don't have any sound on this computer. I thought he was pointing to another shovel and telling you to get to work on the the feed grinder:)!
Dan 73,
That second cutting of hay looks nice with a 17 on the rake!

After now owning my first D17 for several months I am firmly attached to itI I have to get some pictures loaded!

That is my dad.  He actually was pointing at the bare ears of corn that the dear had eaten.  He wanted me to get pictures of that and show how deer come right into the yard and eat.  You can see how deep the snow was at that time though.

This one isn't mine, but the combine is. The tractor is a 1958 D17 gasser.

Dan73,
Sorry my mistake. Get that 17 together!
Creston,
What are you doing in the middle of the field? Opening up the center? That is a good picture and I can see what mine should look like with the PO colored grill.

I just finished hauling wood, for the sugarhouse, with the D17 this year. Had a good time running it! Power steering sure made it easier to back the trailer around too. Was almost ready to do some fall plowing.
Regards,
 Chris

Well you know how it is Chris these kids have a different way of doing things.... man I hope no one knows where my d17 was when it blew the motor.... cutting out the outside edge of my cut in the middle of a too wide field....

Oh Chris i just got the last of the motor parts the other day the block is still at the machine shop.   Sometimes I wish people didn't try to save me money by getting the special when it fits in deals. I didn't ask for it this time just got so luck as to get the lower slower rate....

Actually that's a friend of mine, but yes, I made the first round and cut about a 10 acre section out of the 40 acre field. We worked on the 10 acres all day, and that evening the big combines rolled in after finishing another field, and they finished off the rest that night.

Allis sold the D-17 as a 5 plow tractor. So I found a 5-14 slat bottom real close to home. My dad and uncle said that it would never pull it. I told them Allis usually under sold the equipment and it should handle it well. So I head out and start plowing the hay field. I thought I was going to be eating crow. First gear low range and that tractor was scratch in the dirt snorting and complaining . I tuffed out and after the bottoms started scouring it got a whole lot better. By the time I was done the tractor was in 3rd gear and jumping between low and high range. No wheel weights just fluid in the tires.

Ditto where I grew up. It would have had trouble pulling four bottoms.

I have an old sales brochure on the D-17 IV and it states 4 plow/4-6 row. There is NO WAY a D-17 could pull a 5 bottom plow and do it right here in central Ky. In fact around here it could not even pull 4 bottoms and sometimes 3 bottoms is too much if you are truly plowing and not just turning over the sod.

Heck down there at Joes it could probably pull a 12 bottom till the goat heads pop the tires... All that sand would turn over easy as long as you don't hit bolders...

If the D-17 could not pull a five bottom plow why would Allis produce such plow that used the snap-coupler hitch? The D-17 was the flagship at the time.
Here is a picture of a D-17 pulling a 5 bottom plow. The image is from an Allis brochure for the "New D-17" tractor which we now know as the series I.
