Here is a shot of Allis Dave plowing on my 1958 D17 when he visited this spring.

Does hauling a trailer count as work?

How about getting ready to work?

Chris those are great shots of the plowing. I like the way Dave is watching the work not the camera. Also like the shot from the back it really shows just how it is sitting as it plows.

Thanks again joe. That's not a good picture but yes that's our new idea transplanter that my great uncle bought new through my grandfather as well as the D-17. They are planting pumpkin seed. We always used that transplanting tomatoes and one year long time ago we try'd just dropping seed in and they grew pritty well so that's how we plant pumpkin and butternut squash, the tank has water in it that we mix up miracle grow in and there's settings to drop a shot of water to whatever spacing you want and you put your plant in or seed in. I had joe post that thinking was a little different then the other pictures. And the other picture is dad scraping the driveway this morning and the 17 series IV is hooked to wagon load of hay I took picture the other day when taking pictures of the B.
That picture of us planting was the second year after being paralyzed, my neighbor hung me off forks and they rolled tractor under me lol

Cool I guessed they where planting something but no idea what or how you know the spacing that is neat. Probably a pretty dusty ride back there.

Great pictures of the 17's working! Pat I fooled you on the plows those moldboards were sandblasted and then sprayed with silver metallic!
That transplanter brings back memories of planting acres of cabbage. Dad bought a Allis Model B to get slow enough for us to plant the WD45 was too fast.

That is my dad.  He actually was pointing at the bare ears of corn that the dear had eaten.  He wanted me to get pictures of that and show how deer come right into the yard and eat.  You can see how deep the snow was at that time though.

Dan73,
Sorry my mistake. Get that 17 together!
Creston,
What are you doing in the middle of the field? Opening up the center? That is a good picture and I can see what mine should look like with the PO colored grill.

I just finished hauling wood, for the sugarhouse, with the D17 this year. Had a good time running it! Power steering sure made it easier to back the trailer around too. Was almost ready to do some fall plowing.

 Chris

Well you know how it is Chris these kids have a different way of doing things.... man I hope no one knows where my d17 was when it blew the motor.... cutting out the outside edge of my cut in the middle of a too wide field....

Oh Chris i just got the last of the motor parts the other day the block is still at the machine shop.   Sometimes I wish people didn't try to save me money by getting the special when it fits in deals. I didn't ask for it this time just got so luck as to get the lower slower rate....

Actually that's a friend of mine, but yes, I made the first round and cut about a 10 acre section out of the 40 acre field. We worked on the 10 acres all day, and that evening the big combines rolled in after finishing another field, and they finished off the rest that night.

Allis sold the D-17 as a 5 plow tractor. So I found a 5-14 slat bottom real close to home. My dad and uncle said that it would never pull it. I told them Allis usually under sold the equipment and it should handle it well. So I head out and start plowing the hay field. I thought I was going to be eating crow. First gear low range and that tractor was scratch in the dirt snorting and complaining . I tuffed out and after the bottoms started scouring it got a whole lot better. By the time I was done the tractor was in 3rd gear and jumping between low and high range. No wheel weights just fluid in the tires.

Ditto where I grew up. It would have had trouble pulling four bottoms.

I have an old sales brochure on the D-17 IV and it states 4 plow/4-6 row. There is NO WAY a D-17 could pull a 5 bottom plow and do it right here in central Ky. In fact around here it could not even pull 4 bottoms and sometimes 3 bottoms is too much if you are truly plowing and not just turning over the sod.

Heck down there at Joes it could probably pull a 12 bottom till the goat heads pop the tires... All that sand would turn over easy as long as you don't hit bolders...

If the D-17 could not pull a five bottom plow why would Allis produce such plow that used the snap-coupler hitch? The D-17 was the flagship at the time.
Here is a picture of a D-17 pulling a 5 bottom plow. The image is from an Allis brochure for the "New D-17" tractor which we now know as the series I.

It all depends on the soil and conditions.   We had a two bottom for our D17s in the tough alfalfa fields. Other times 3 bottoms was just right. Those tough conditions give our 185 a good load with a three bottom but should usually have four on it.

Also what model of plow. I have a 4 bottom plow that the D-17 will not pull, but if you stay with the #50 - #80 series all should be good.

Very nice pictures of the 5 bottom plows on the D17. Sounds like correct plows and correct soil conditions are some of the factors to make this system work.

Pictures are awesome! I never saw a cultivator set up like that! Is that a 4 row?
The 17 and the corn planter shots are very good representation. What type of seeds are being planted? I assume corn but could be other seeds too?

Have to find my camera and get some pictures of mine in light duty action too.

 Chris

I use that planter for corn and beans. Corn in this case. It is a planter that was cut down from 8 rows to 2.

I never have either, but the cushion deluxe seat and power steering were OPTIONAL on a D-17 series 4.

Ok folks,
I finally got some time and found the camera.
Some shots of the D17 loafing while the little Ford (yes the F word) cuts slab wood for making syrup next spring. Its a stretch to call it work but its not a tractor show either!:)

I cut 6 cord per year and this may be the last year from this pile of slabs. Lots of sorting to get good ones.

The 3 point buzz rig at its best.

The trailer has been repainted to match Allis colors!

We have cut out of this pile for about 4 years and heated the house one year from there also. My son used these to heat his house two years. The D17 didn't even know there was anything behind it on these small loads, about 1/4 cord.

Regards,
 Chris

That saw is one of those things I need to get. Sure makes cutting the smaller stuff go faster.
