I assume you guys out east are watching this auction. Sure are a neat looking tractor, once again on the wrong end of the world from me.

That would be a neat tractor to drag home. The serial number is about 2800 away from my '39. I'm like you - it's just too far!

Here's a picture I took of Dale Haymaker's Asparagus B at last year's OPOP.

The Asparagus B tractor is a basic B tractor with special front axle, fenders and rear wheels. This tractor has the wrong fenders, the only thing Asparagus is the right front axle and rear wheels that do not look very good. A person wanting an Asparagus B will have to decide if the $998.00 reserve price is worth what you get. MHO. The correct fenders for the Asparagus B is the styled WF tractor fender with a plate welded in for the axle on the WF.

I thought I saw in Swinfords book that they had different gearing for the tall tires. If so, where was the gearing changed, in the tranny, rearend or final drives? I would think knowing that gearing is there would be very important before you bought one just to be sure it's not a look-a-like.

The parts books do not call out any different gearing. What Swinford book did you see that in?
Dale is correct about this tractor, you are really buying a front end, and some regular B parts. Those rear rims look shot, and I am not sure what they did with the fronts, as that number tractor ought to have rivited rims, and those are mounted backwards.
There is no step that is usually on the Asparagus tractor either.
The radiator shroud looked pretty nice, until you look close and see that it is rusted out too.
At least the guy is honest when he calls it a parts tractor, as it is mostly scrap iron. I know that strikes Bill Long right in the heart to say that, but this one, even at the right price, would make me think twice about driving 3 hours each way to fetch it. I guess it is a good test of my pledge not to buy anything else for a while.... Evil Smile

Swinfords book, Farm Equipment 1914-1985. Bottom of page 53. I'm guessing his reserve price is less than the buy-it-now. I know your gathering funds but I'd sure throw a bid in at the end if I were you.

I would want to see it in person, before I would risk a dime.
Somehow 6 hours round trip to look at a junk tractor is not real high on my list, as there is one that has all the correct parts less than an hour from me..... I have not pressed on buying that one, as I have been conserving funds, but I am first in line when/if the "sell" decision is made.

I've been looking for a Asparagus B for quite some time. That one is only a couple hours away from me, but that one is scary lookin' to me! The rust worm really bit on that one and still is working on it. Anything thats been sitting outside that close to the ocean is worst than one way up North-West here sitting outside in a corn field. I wouldn't waste my valuable time either for that one. That Glenn holdin' out on us again man.... He's sly. He knows where all the good ones are hiding. Maybe if he sells a Pintle hook and get's some cash-ola' in his pocket, he might fess up! LOL!

You guys are funny, I don't do it that way. If I find something worth buying that I want, I buy it, that way I know where it is and who it belongs to. Had stuff sold out from under me when I was "first in line".

Lonnie,
The only reason it ain't home is the fella can't decide if he is ready to part with it yet. Do not worry, I keep in regular contact with him and he knows that when the time is right, he will have CASH in hand. Sometimes you can't force a guy to sell, but you can sure let him know that his tractor will go to a good home if he does. That sometimes means more than money.  Glenn

Glenn:  Same thing happened to me with a CA, you are so right on the money. Here is the story, son of the lead AC mechanic for my great uncle inherited his CA.  15 years ago he wanted to sell it, went to visit and started reminiscing and he couldn't part with it.  I said no problem I understand probably should stay in the family - fast forward to 2011 got a call from him, and was ready to sell.  Would not sell to his family or others, sold it to me for same price that he quoted 15 years earlier with full complement of implements.

Money does not always win out in the end!

Sometimes friendship wins the day.

Hope someone does get this Asp. B and works towards putting it back to original if that is possible...Orangeman

Glenn, looks like they removed the rivets and flipped the rim around. They are 6 hole and rims look right except backwards.

If they're like thomsons they have 16" rims with wd hubs and the wd rims and tires rub so you have to put them on backwards. One of the rims on my thomson was shot so I had to use a wd wheel and scoot the center in 5/8" and weld it back.

Thad I have had 3 thompson high crops like what you are talking about.
All three have had WD hubs also and the rims have been cut from the center and rewelded to allow the rims to be mounted correctly, this allow 1/2 to 1" away from the spindle.
I got to look at this  couple nights ago as a friend was restoring one he bought from me he had the B wheels ready to bolt on found out the hard way he was going to need WC or WD wheels i never had paid attention that these wheel were different.
when he bought the tractor i told i was kepting the wheels not knowing they were different.

Glenn,
I won't need that narrow front for that C. I'm gonna part it out and use some of the parts for a rusty B I just purchased.....

I agree with Glenn, if it's an early short arm you should save it, only 108 of those made.

Glenn,
LOL!  Actually, I was just bustin' ya to see if you would "bite" on my comment about the Hi Crop B. I didn't purchase it, but I'm keeping that C. I know they are pretty scarce. As rusty as it is, (things are falling off it while it sits) it's gonna need some serious "resto" work thats for sure!! I was gonna start collecting parts for that ole' girl this year. First on the ajenda is a case of Kroil.......

Steve,
I can help out with that!  I was at my buddy Ed's the other day, and I think I can scare up all the missing sheetmetal, etc that you will need. That is, if he will sell it to me!

Darn, I was hoping you did buy the Asparagus B, I have to say, if I was not raising cash for land, I might have been tempted to buy it as a "parts tractor". It was likely worth the $600, but not $998..........

Glenn,
Tony C has a mint C grille he's gonna send me out for that Tractor, so that's a start. I understand the C fenders are different than the B fenders, so I'll be lookin' for a set of those puppies also. I might need a seat frame for that thing to. The one on there is bent up. Don't ask me how it got bent up, but its been that way before we got it that's for sure! Maybe Harold bent it pulling it out from under the lean-to....?Confused

I'll have to look at the serial number of mine again. I used to know it, but ya know, ya start getting a little age on and all of a sudden that CRS starts kickin' in! Confused  I knew those C's were a little on the scarce side, but didn't know they were that shy on the production side of it. That's interesting.  Glenn, see if Ed has a nice straight seat frame that isn't bent or a bucket of rust...

WOW BAD EYESITE, CHECKED AGAIN , THE SHORT ARM C HAS ENG # CE16460G NOT, #1646G. IT APPEARS TO BE THE RIGHT ENG FOR THIS TRACTOR , BUT THE FRT PEDESTAL & STEERING ARE BOTH SHORT ARM. THINK THEY WERE CLEANING OUT THE PARTS BIN DURING THE WAR?
