It all comes down to money. Over a 1000 acres and a few years it doesn’t take much waste from overlap to add up. We have ran a light bar to spay and spread fertilizer for pushing 15 years. Got my first auto steer a couple years ago and this past summer put it in my 8050 to plant beans with. Did a test pass with it while discing last fall and now I’m casually looking for two more systems for my tillage tractors. I see how they could over time pay for themselves. Like I’ve read on other sites you can focus on the field operation and not following a line. Even with LED’s planter marks can get hard to see at 2am. |

It is kinda cool. I don’t have any experience planting but I was chopping corn stalks after the combine few winters ago and the tractor I was using had auto steer. I did part of the field with out it then the one guy said try it. So I played with settings for the size of brush hog. And started on other side of field. When I got to middle and met up to the side I started without. I couldn’t believe the amount that showed that would have saved if used auto steer from other side.

I'm running an Ag Leader Edge on WAAS in my 8050. This fall i picked up a OnTrac2 steering unit for a steal but haven't had time to get it working well. Biggest issue i'm having is a lot of slop in the steering which causes a delay in steering correction, and then it starts weaving through the field. I believe the newer systems deal with the slop in the steering better. I also have a lightbar i can stick up on the windshield which is what i used most of last year. I'm running a 15ft drill without markers and just having the lightbar made it easier to keep things straight and even. I'm hoping to get the Ontrac2 working better for this year but may just spend the money to go to a newer system.
As for true hydraulic steering check out agopengps.com TONS of info on there from all across the globe. Lots of guys are making their own hydraulic steering systems, and even a lot of guys making their own RTK receivers to use with various guidance systems. Otherwise i've been told its close to
$10k or more to go with a full hydraulic retrofit system from Ag Leader
or Outback. |
