ummmmmm, the first year for the side mount on the 8N Flathead was 50 and the last year was 52.  53 was the advent to the red tiger engine.

I happen to own a 50 model with the Sherman hi/lo trans which gives it 12 forward gears.  Did i count that right?  Confused

Fords are supposed to be pick ups. Between my FW 30 and uncles Genesis my Ford tractor desire is cured.

Well you can't really blame Ford Motor Company for problems with that FW 30, because they didn't have anything to do with it other than putting their name on it and selling it. It was built by Steiger in Fargo, North Dakota.

Your 100% right on FW30 but still can blame them on the Genesis.

The Fordson Major was a decent tractor. My uncle had one.

True story; Other than being a farm kid from years ago, a Ford 8N is what got me into the tractor thing. When my buddy and I started doing food plots the only tractor we had was his 8N. After doing a few days of brush hogging with that I decided if we were going to keep doing food plots I needed to add a real tractor to the list, that's when I bought my D17. Since then, like every other farmer, we've added more land, our equipment has gotten bigger, and we've added a few more tractors.

I guess once a farmer always a farmer, even if it's just a Play Farmer - which is why it's still FUN!

Try doing some work with a team of horses. I bet you'll start to think the 8n isn't so bad. That is what the 8n replaced.

I've worked horses and it'd be a toss up would depend a lot on the team, now with mules
I'd choose them over an 8N hands downLOL

The 1952 8n my grandfather had replaced a 1942 Case VAC that had replaced the mules during WWII.  That 8n was only 10 years newer but it was light years ahead of that old Case.

The old man runs a ford 5000.  ya can run it for about 20mins then it shuts off, unless ya blow in the gas tank.  seems like a vapor lock, but it has steel lines and none seem to be getting hot.  he'd probly kick my ..... if I told him I was thinking of buying a ford, after he heard me constantly battling the 8n and the problems with his.

been checked for the seizures, take some pills and for the most part got em under control.  just the odd one here and there.  The ford in question is a 861 diesel. The wife is pretty understanding my farm projects, she used to get mad when I'd go up to a friends she hated when we went to the equipment shed, I'd always drag something home.
When I was growing up Dad rented a diesel 971 Select-O-Speed from the land owner to use for planting. Other than the jerking power shift and the power steering didn't work it wasn't a bad tractor for us. We also rented a Power Major and sometimes a 9N for small jobs from him. I hated the 9N but the rest were OK.

Hmmmm, maybe that's why I've had a couple of those cantankerous seizures myself. Never thought of what could be garnered in blaming the wife.

even ford guys were telling me to stay away from the select o speed.  guess they were great when they worked, but a giant  pain in the .... when they don't.

seizures have gotten a lot better.  used to be 5-6 times a week.  never knew were I'd wake up.....

when in doubt blame the wife....Wink

The early Select0speeds where junk. The engineer in charge refused to sign them ready for production and Ford fired him. Eventually the SOS was made into a good transmission.

That engineer found a new job at JD Waterloo and designed the Power Shift transmission that was trouble free from its beginning. He stayed at Deere for some 30 or 40 years until he retired.

Our first diesel powered tractor on this farm was a new Fordson Major back in the 50's; as it was for many other farmers in the area. We had a Ford dealership right here in our one-horse town.

In this area, The British built diesels were far more common than their American red and gray counterparts. It's interesting that Ford somehow got themselves in a unusual situation back then where they found themselves competing against themselves and losing!

I hope to find a Major for my collection one day. They were a good machine but rapidly become too small for most farms as the power-crazed 60's wore on.

There's still a ton 4000, 5000, and 7000's out there earning their keep in the fields. Good cheap 4wd horse power can often be found in the TW series for 20k or less....

If I remember the old saying about the Ford 6000 commanders, I think it went something like: "If its red and gray, just run away! If its blue and white, might be alright!"

Worked on a Ferguson and 2N before for friends. Wasn't impressed at all. They drove fine if your kidneys were secured pretty well.
Only thing good was the parts are available and cheap enough.

Acquired a 1320 Ford/New NH for mowing. 3 cyl diesel, all hydro.
Parts are not available only through NH and they ain't cheap. Good tractor and easy on the body.
Had to go through the hydro pump and a set of about 40 o-ring/seals was $400.
Came in what looked like a sandwich bag from NH.

If I had a choice of a 5040-45 or 50 for working tractor.   I would go to a Ford in the same power range EVERY time hands down.

There are other AC's that if they where your working tractor ,yes Ford 8N (staying in the HP range ) might be a better choice pending how u use it.

I changed out a lot SOS trans over the years for my customers.

what I do like about the fords, Massey Ferguson, is the low center of gravity.  the lower and wide the better on my side hill.
