Do you have to take off the air filter / air intake or can you get the pcv valve without doing that? Is it just easier with it off?

I've had two shops tell me that you have to take the air intake off and that you have to replace the air intake seals etc. in order to put it all back on, costly as much as 500 dollars just to replace a 12 dollar valve.

With almost 340,000 miles,I think that I put a qt of oil in cheaper and the vehicle is about shot anyway--so what I am saying I probably won't replace the pcv valve. As you well know, oil has gotten expensive compared to what it used to be. It was just a thought that maybe the pcv valve is why it started smoking sometimes and using oil- about a qt every 1500 miles. Dodge components usually outlast their bodies anyway as is the case- the bed has rusted out yrs ago. I am still on the original transmission
