Morton I have a 2000 6 liter gmc with 280000 and it's never been touched but maintenance. I do think you need to keep a real good eye on the frontend and tires. I live in the Ozarks and we have very steep crooked roads and the mpg is a killer. I bought it used from my dad where it was hooked up to a 28' cattle trailer constantly for the first half of it's life. It sure could use a tighter turning radius at the wally world parking lot. It runs circles around my '88 gmc with a carb'd 383 stroker. I have a neighbor with an 02 silverado with the big motor and 80000 miles that will be for sale this spring. It's slick as a new one.

You all are making me drool with all those nice shiny rides. I would love a new full size Chevy right now but can't justify what with no heavy hauls, fuel prices, 3 kids, and my daily commute. You have made me realize that I do need to get some recent pics of my old daily driver while it still looks decent. I haven't taken any pics of it in a few years. I have commuted 80+ miles daily into Louisville since moving here in 2000(except for the 16 months spent unemployed 2008-2009). My daily driver is a 1996 Chevy S10 4cyl/5spd we bought brand new(50 miles on odo). It now is creeping up on 180,000 miles and still runs great. It runs 28-30 mpg most of the year but does drop to 25 mpg once I put on its winter shoes. The only major issue has been 2 head gaskets(GM 4 cyl known for this). First one at ~92,000 and second one just recently at ~173,000. Both times gasket has blown out so that coolant leaks externally-no internal engine damage. It still has original clutch, exhaust, alternator. I have replaced battery 2x and serpentine 1X. Only brand new tires I have bought are the current snow tires running on truck(4th winter). The current summer tires I have(only 2nd set for truck) I bought used from tire shop after a customer left them behind because he had custom wheels/tires put on his 2002 S10. I got 4 (rims/tires/caps/lugs) for $200 same time I bought snow tires(2007). They are also Uniroyals just like my truck came with from the factory. The factory tires were still legal(good tread) but the sidewalls were concerning me with the visible weatherchecking. They still hold air performing well enough to keep my project Impala off the ground. Someday I would love to own a new Duramax but that is only because I am so impressed with how well my little S10 has held up ever since I bought it.

the 93/94 Ford 7.3L IDI turbo diesels had ATS kits I believe. I have also seen the early PS with turbo diesel badges. My 2 1984 Lincoln Mark VII have the same Turbo Diesel badge on the trunk. Kinda neat to see recycling.

Most if not all of the 94.5 DIT diesels were marked Turbo Diesel on the fender but the shroud over the filter area said "Powerstroke". We owned 4-5 of them and still have one running. As you said for a while you could get either BUT it depended on which transmission you wanted. You could get a 5 Speed behind the very first DIT engines but quickly some issues developed with the Z5 and Getrag gave Ford heartburn over warrenty so they stopped building them. I had one of the very first model year 1995 badged Powerstroke 250s built and I could not get a manual transmission, that almost caused me to get a Chevy. For a short while if you wanted a manual transmission turbo diesel you got a Turbo IDI , if automatic you got the DIT engine. An interesting aside is that the "factory" turbo IDI is nothing more than a Hypermax aftermarket kit with "Ford turbo diesel" or something cast into the intake boot. I think Ford did make a couple small internal changes in the turbo engine, nothing major.

morton,
I've got a 2500 with a 6.0, right at 11-12 mpg average use in the winter, short trips and warm up, 15 if I have perfect conditions on a trip, absolutly perfect and keep my foot out of it. 8-10 pulling average loads of 4000-10,000 pounds etc. with some empyt traveling. It's no economy queen, but I sure like the 6.0
I've also got an 06 Duramax 2500, 13-14 useing it for average short trips and pulling and a little work, and 19 average on a trip, 21 in perfect conditions.
Both are extended cab short box trucks with regular 265 or 245 X 75 X 16 (I can't rember which) Firestone Transforce tires. The tires don't last verry long on the Duramax. Edited by wi50 - 01 Feb 2011 at 10:44pm |

Morton a 03 2500 with 6.0 and 4:10 gears will get 14 empty on a good day and maybe 8 pulling a load, but has plenty of power and very reliable.

Just wondering for those of you out there that have them, as I've been reading.
What are you guys who are running the 2000-2007 Chevy 2500's getting on fuel mileage? Gas or Diesel? Looking at one of these as the next truck. |

Great looking trucks everyone. Thanks for sharing.
I have a 2000 F350 7.3 crewcab 2wd 6spd dually that has 275,000 miles of hard pulling a 32' gooseneck trailer with gvwr of 25,000 - 29,000 lbs. The 7.3 has 2 cylinders compressing only 350 lbs, rest are either 390 or 400. This summer I replaced 2 injectors. After harvest, my mechanic compression tested it. The 2 cylinders that are low pressure are #2 & #7, the opposite ends of the bank ends. Also, the other 6 injectors were probably needed to be changed. Last fall a freak frayed serpentine belt cut the 6spd trans cooler lines while driving loaded on the interstate destroying the clutch & tranny. So, my insurance helped paid for most of the new clutch & 6spd. After that, the 7.3L started running warmer than usual. I managed to get thru harvest with it, but often had to drop a gear & run the cab heater to help control the temp. Until the compression test, I thought it may just have a air bubble in the coolant. But thats a negative.
The long and short of this story is that it has become my winter project. I have a local shop where the mechanic knows desiels very well. So, I have chosen him to swap the worn 7.3L with a used 1996 5.9L 12v 215hp cummins out of a 170,000 mile donor Dodge truck. This engine has the P7100 fuel injection pump coupled with the regular injectors. I have been told that the cummins engines are good for 500,000 - 750,000 miles. And, that it should be capable of 275hp without replacing stock injectors? My 7.3L was pulling 230hp stock. It was not supertuned. I hope the 5.9L couples good with the 4.10 rear gears in my Ford. I will share photos and specs when it gets completed.

I had a truck that was a 94.5 with a Powerstroke DI in it. It was badged turbo diesel on the fender and the tailgate. When you opened the hood the intake said Powerstroke on it and you had to get Powerstroke parts for it, The truck was orginal too no motor swaps never been wrecked or anything like that. Its not the only one ive seen either. It was advertized at 210hp.

And thats what I said...read your own post again....you stated the IDI Turbo was gone by 94.5 which is was....but you said it was only 93 and 94 that had the engine....you were partially wrong on that because the IDI Turbo was 93 to 94.5 and then you said the Powerstroke came out early with just Turbo Diesel badges and were detuned....they were not....They were 250/275HP and 525/550 Ft. lbs from first production unless you saw some kind of pre-production release. The Powerstrokes always had Powerstroke badge's on the fender....I remember that because when shopping for trucks in early 95, that was the easiest way to tell if a truck was an IDI turbo or Powerstroke at first glance.

Benny, Your post stated that the IDI was suposed to be a one year gapfiller until the new motor was brought out. It also stated that the new motor was not ready to run the full 94 production year, and the IDI was carried over until MID year. That would be 94.5. |

You said the IDI was gone by 94.5 and it wasnt...You could order a 1994.5 model year Ford F250 and up with an IDI Turbo OR a Powerstroke......the Powerstroke didnt come out until Mid-Production year so there was half year of each engine produced in 1994....Thats what I was correcting you on.

97 F-Superduty, 164K miles. 7.3 Powerstroke, 5 speed. We cut this down from a long wheelbase truck and added the flatbed. Fast, fun and a tow monster. Lots of mods, U.S. gear overdrive/splitter, stage one injectors, 6 position 140HP chip by T-S. Intake and exhaust mods. Soon to be intercooled.

You could order it either way...Dad ordered a new Powerstroke in 95 when the Dealerships still had lots of IDI Turbo's on the lot....I remember test driving one with him....it was 2 tone blue extended cab F250....he didnt like it because it had the E40D trans.....Here is a quote from a Wikipedia page to also show they did build them(that and my first white dually was a mid year 94 IDI Turbo....not trying to start a pissing contest...just dont like being told I'm wrong when I'm not is all. The International Harvester IDI (from Indirect Injection) engine is a 4-stroke V-8 Diesel engine used in International trucks and Ford F-Series pickups from 1982 to 1994. The engine had two displacements: 420 cubic inches (6.9 litres), which was used in Ford trucks from 1983 to 1987, and 444 cubic inches (7.3 litres), which was used in Ford trucks from 1988 to 1992 (naturally aspirated). The turbo charged version was to be a single year stopgap as production of the new Power Stroke engine was to debut with the 1994 model year. (turbocharged). Production of the 7.3 Turbo IDI engine was extended to mid-year 1994 as the new engine was not ready in time for a full 1994 model year run. The turbo 7.3 was very similar to the previous 6.9l and 7.3l IDI diesel engines. They differed in that the 7.3 IDI Turbo had different wrist pins, piston rings, as well as different flow capacity fuel injectors. Additionally, the fuel injection pump output was slightly increased to compensate for the additional air charge. This engine was replaced in mid 1994 by the Navistar T444E (7.3L) engine. The 6.9 IDI, 7.3 IDI, and 7.3 IDIT engines are not in the Power Stroke family. |
