We use Dad's '05 Ram 2500 with the 5.9L diesel 4X4 to pull the tractors around with. He had the turnover gooseneck ball installed and a sprayed in bedliner right after he bought it. Only has right at 30,000 miles on it so far and has plenty of power to pull my D14 and the JD A on a 25 footer. Gets a little over 18 mpg empty.

We pulled my D14, Dad's JD H, and a buddy's 8N Ford on our gooseneck at the same time back in October. She knew she was back there but never hesitated. We haven't tried the D14, H, and the A at the same time. Don't have enough room on the trailer or he'd try it I'm sure...

2000 GMC Sierra Z71. 204000 miles has a small oil leak but still goes 3-4000 miles before adding a quart of oil, so I think its say to say it don't burn any oil.

These are trucks I have owned over the years.  The brown 1983 Chevy I bought when I was a kid, (350 4 speed), spent a lot of money on body work and motor.  The red 1995 Z71 bought new, it was a GREAT truck, very few problems sold it with over 200,000 miles.  The grey 2006 2500HD was my favorite truck, bought it new, got totaled when a trailblazer hit me head on.  Now I have the 2008 1500, bought this one new also, have changed to aluminum wheels and lifted the front end 2" since this photo was taken.

Empty in the cold it gets 21 miles an gal but in the summer I can get 30 with the cap off. 200,000 km on it. I do have an custom 5 in exhaust and an k&n air filter. it's not chipped. I've not looked in to what gears are in it but it's got more power then I need. thxchuck

2001 Ford F350 crew cab V-10.  Herman or The Hermanator as we call him (after Herman Munster).  125,000 miles.  18 mpg - 8 in the winter + 10 in the summer = 18.................
Has been a good truck, I can't complain.  Don't drive it as much as before due the price of gas, but he always starts and pulls the camper and boat with no complaints.  The auto lock hubs quit working a while back so I just leave them locked in all winter.
I used to work for GMC Truck, we had a special project back in the late '70's, we would pick parts off the assembly line for our project, after seeing the line work, and the design process from the inside, I have driven Fords ever since.  Cheers,
Creek

This is my 1986 Chevrolet C10 that has 210,000 miles on it but I done a frame off restoration on it about 3 years ago and now only gets driven in good weather.  I still like the ride of it as good as any of the newer ones and I don't have to worry about ABS brakes, power windows and locks, computers, air bag lights, or any of that other stuff that sucks the green out of your wallet.

My towing truck is a '95 F-350 Crew-cab 7.3 Powerstroke

with diesel hitting $3.00 plus this year it was removed from it's daily driver position and replaces with this 2010 Prius, I hate little cars but 50-60 MPG on a weekly 600+ drive it was purely a business decision!

Yeah, I've heard the same thing that their coolant is junk, go figure. lol. Havent done the EGR delete, Id like to though, along with the new STC fitting for the HPOP. Soon I'll have to replace my oil cooler, cruising down the road ECT is 180, and EOT is 200 or higher, I've seen a 30* gap between the 2 pulling the 32ft gooseneck. Prolly not good for things. lol. Im might just take it in for warranty work, because my FICM isnt happy, It's had the code thrown for about a year now, still going strong though! Haha  Im still trying to figure out whats better, Bully Dog or SCT, Bully Dog has more power, but SCT shifts alot nicer, and i get a handfull of defuels with Bully Dog, SCT doesnt have that. So Idk, I wanna try the Looney Wild from Vivian, I have her tunes now, but just the regular Looney tune. Not thrilled with the tow tune at all, the thing is a pooch! Bully Dog is way better when i got the trailer.

2005 F350 crew cab Lariat FX4 6.0 power stroke. AFE intake system, Bully Dog E3 tuner, MBRP exhaust turbo back. The Bully Dog E3 tuner really made it come to life its just a 50hp upgrade and helps more so for mpg, and towing. I think that its well worth the money for the 6.0, I increased mpg from 16.8 to 18.9 on short runs/stop and go. Highway miles cruise at 71 mph, I have seen 21.0. Pulling 30ft gooseneck with average load of #13880, it stays around 14.2-15.1 running speed on two lane roads at 59mph. Highway loads I run at 63mph and dont see much of a change if any in mpg. 6.0 does have its downfalls had new oil cooler update and egr update as well as a few sensors here and there, plus injectors, but for the most part all was covered under warranty.

On powerstroke.org they did a survey of 6.0 owners and SCT was top choice....mostly with tunes from Innovative...

View Poll Results: Which tuner do you use?
Diablo 40 4.26%
Banks 43 4.58%
SCT 418 44.56%
Edge 122 13.01%
Bullydog 58 6.18%
Stock No tuner 200 21.32%
Other please list in the thread 57 6.08%
Voters: 938.

this gives you an idea of what guys think of the programmers.....if you do decide to do the oil cooler rebuild....do yourself a favor and change coolants but do it BEFORE the rebuild....a guy on the powerstroke page didnt and flushed after he rebuilt the cooler and plugged a brand new one. Just a word of advice is all.....I thought LONG and hard before buying a 6.0 because of the one dad had....that Harley F250 I posted a pic of was an 04 with 18000 miles and was a turd....had a Volante Cold Air Kit, Bully Dog Power Pup and 5 inch exhaust....it would get out and run but not as well as my stock 06 does and it had turbo problems....ate a VGT sensor once and was running 45psi of boost all the time, and it would defuel/stutter quite often....never liked that truck much, but I love my 06.

A Chev 2500HD Ext Cab Short Box 6.0 L Auto 4wd.  It is a good truck but I am not real happy about all the fuel it drinks.  10 mpg pulling a trailer and 14 empty.  I think it should be getting at least 16 empty.  I was able to do that with my old 95 although it was a standard in its favour too.

RW, Your not too far away from me. Only I've had my liscense for two years. You have two to go.....Save the criticism about the plate. I put it on before I got on this site! I just ran outside and took a picture the way it sits. 1999 Ford F-250 SD, 7.3 Diesel with auto tranny and 128K. I don't like automatics and i couldn't find a good dodge or ford diesel with the manual tranny so I ended up going with this. No rust on the body at all. It's one truck that has been taken care of very well. It doesn't look very nice now but in the summer when I wax it and shine the wheels up that baby sparkles. I have a meyers 7.5' plow on the front right now. The mods it has is a bully dog 6 posistion chip, MBRP 4" stainless the whole way back, Air Raid air intake, Under Cover hard bed cover (took it off for convenience reasons), Kenwood Stereo and Sony X-plod speakers. I never use the bully dog. No need. Towed my farmall (at least 10K) the whole way back up and down pretty good hills. I hate the way the transmission isn't good at getting power to my wheels though. The air intake is ok but when it's pulling good up a long hill it just screams and that's all I heard for two and a half hours bringing my farmall home. I had a slight headache. I have all of the paperwork for it since it was brand new so I can see all the service records and what was replaced. Got it for 13,200 with the plow and all the mods. Only thing i've done to it is the stereo and the speakers. I added ford decals to my back windows and stuck a plate on the front. I've had it since Oct 09' and my pap gave me a liscense plate to put on the front which explains the "animal".

Always been a Ford guy, but had an 01 QC Ram cummins dually for a year after having an 04 F150 supercrew. Could not stand the lack of cab space in the QC, so I traded for an 07 Mega-Cab, 5.9L cummins, 6 speed 4X4 dually. Really like the truck, LOVE the CUMMINS! I just prefer 6 cylinder diesels to V8's. Truck had EDGE Juice w/attitude monitor(came with truck) Smarty tuner, S&B intake, 4" straight piped exh, and STERLING BULLET grill.

For my daily driver I have a 98 Ford F-150 XL extended cab 4X4 with the 4.6L, 4R70 auto trans and manual shift transfer case.  I got this truck from my dad who bought it new.  He bought it to drive it and get rid of it.  Some dealers didn't want to order it for him because he wanted a base package with no carpet or power anything, he told them the only options he wanted were automatic transmission, 4X4, and air conditioning.  The truck now has about 173,000 miles and no major failures yet (knock on wood).  My tractor hauler is a 1990 F-350 XLT 2wd, 5spd, 7.3 idi na diesel with 133,000 miles that I have had for about 6 years and love it for towing my 25 foot gooseneck but wish I had a little (a lot) more power sometimes .  I can not complain about it though it has never let me down and averages about 15 miles to the gallon loaded as long as you keep the speed under 70mph. I would like to put a turbo on it but it costs more than I paid for the truck for a kit to do it.

Find a junkyard truck with an IDI 7.3 with a turbo, turn you're fuel up a bit and you'll notice a huge gain....my first dually was a 7.3 IDI turbo...ran about 11psi boost tops and ran way better than a naturally aspirated one....pretty straightforward swap really.

I knew it was a factory and aftermarket option.  I have turbo I was thinking about usin to do a remote mount but I don't know if it would be to big to actually work on my truck.  It is from a semi it is a schwitzer/cummins T46 and it is huge, but if it was just a little to big I could possibly run it without a waste gate as I don't need the power to pass everybody while I am pulling 20,000 lbs I just don't like taking hills on the freeway at 45mph.

Thats a whole lotta turbo for that! lol.....Ford/Navistar didnt lower the compression on those IDI's when they turbo'd them so its not hard to overboost one and do some damage.

Yeah it is a pretty serious turbo but it is old technology and I don't know if it would spool on my truck and if it did I would probably be at the red line.  I bought it for 20 bucks and it spins real nice, I was thinking about putting it on my John Deere D for looks and running a pipe off it to make it look like the intake side was hooked up

This is my 2006 F350 6.0 Diesel. I won't brag about fuel economy, but it is way better than the F250 with a 460 gasser and no overdrive that it replaced. It is a lot of fun to drive. Years ago I had a 6.9 naturally aspirated diesel that was a real pooch. I was really surprised how lively the diesels are anymore! This is my current trailer pictured, too.
Here it is with previous trailer:
I always have this option locally-I don't want to mess with medical cards and log books and permits to go out of state with it, even though by all rights, I should use them with the F350 and trailer-but hope I can play dumb when the time comes. (I think I have the qualities to pull it off.)
I have an older Ranger that I will buzz around in sometimes. It is an ebay special. It is a lot handier in parking lots for sure. (who decided to make the spots so tiny, anyhow?)

Here is the 84 D250 I purchased a couple of years ago for $300.  Its undergoing a full body off restoration right now.  Just about have it all back together.  Just have doghouse to paint, and then reassembly.

Adam (Sandknob), those are awesome trucks. If someone says they don't like them it is because they know the old Dodge's can out do their trucks.

You will have to post some pics of the one after you get it finished. Mine (1991 Dodge W150 318 auto) is also getting a major reworking.

Benny, the IDI was gone on the Ford diesel in 94.5. The 93 and 94 had the IDI turbo. The 94.5 had the 1st gen Powerstroke but was derated and un badged. The 95 was the first year for the Powerstroke badging. A 94.5 was badged a Turbo Diesel, but was under rated as to not over power the "new arrival".

You could order it either way...Dad ordered a new Powerstroke in 95 when the Dealerships still had lots of IDI Turbo's on the lot....I remember test driving one with him....it was 2 tone blue extended cab F250....he didnt like it because it had the E40D trans.....Here is a quote from a Wikipedia page to also show they did build them(that and my first white dually was a mid year 94 IDI Turbo....not trying to start a pissing contest...just dont like being told I'm wrong when I'm not is all.

The http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_Harvester - International Harvester http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_Harvester_IDI - IDI (from Indirect Injection) engine is a http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/4-stroke - 4-stroke http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/V-8 - V-8 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diesel_engine - Diesel engine used in International trucks and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_F-Series - Ford F-Series pickups from 1982 to 1994. The engine had two displacements: 420 cubic inches (6.9 litres), which was used in Ford trucks from 1983 to 1987, and 444 cubic inches (7.3 litres), which was used in Ford trucks from 1988 to 1992 ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Naturally-aspirated_engine - naturally aspirated ). The turbo charged version was to be a single year stopgap as production of the new Power Stroke engine was to debut with the 1994 model year. ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turbocharger - turbocharged ). Production of the 7.3 Turbo IDI engine was extended to mid-year 1994 as the new engine was not ready in time for a full 1994 model year run. The turbo 7.3 was very similar to the previous 6.9l and 7.3l IDI diesel engines. They differed in that the 7.3 IDI Turbo had different wrist pins, piston rings, as well as different flow capacity fuel injectors. Additionally, the fuel injection pump output was slightly increased to compensate for the additional air charge. This engine was replaced in mid 1994 by the Navistar T444E (7.3L) engine. The 6.9 IDI, 7.3 IDI, and 7.3 IDIT engines are not in the Power Stroke family.

You said the IDI was gone by 94.5 and it wasnt...You could order a 1994.5 model year Ford F250 and up with an IDI Turbo OR a Powerstroke......the Powerstroke didnt come out until Mid-Production year so there was half year of each engine produced in 1994....Thats what I was correcting you on.

Benny, Your post stated that the IDI was suposed to be a one year gapfiller until the new motor was brought out. It also stated that the new motor was not ready to run the full 94 production year, and the IDI was carried over until MID year. That would be 94.5.

Posted By: BennyLumpkin

And thats what I said...read your own post again....you stated the IDI Turbo was gone by 94.5 which is was....but you said it was only 93 and 94 that had the engine....you were partially wrong on that because the IDI Turbo was 93 to 94.5 and then you said the Powerstroke came out early with just Turbo Diesel badges and were detuned....they were not....They were 250/275HP and 525/550 Ft. lbs from first production unless you saw some kind of pre-production release. The Powerstrokes always had Powerstroke badge's on the fender....I remember that because when shopping for trucks in early 95, that was the easiest way to tell if a truck was an IDI turbo or Powerstroke at first glance.

I had a truck that was a 94.5 with a Powerstroke DI in it. It was badged turbo diesel on the fender and the tailgate. When you opened the hood the intake said Powerstroke on it and you had to get Powerstroke parts for it, The truck was orginal too no motor swaps never been wrecked or anything like that. Its not the only one ive seen either. It was advertized at 210hp.

Great looking trucks everyone.  Thanks for sharing.

I have a 2000 F350 7.3 crewcab 2wd 6spd dually that has 275,000 miles of hard pulling a 32' gooseneck trailer with gvwr of 25,000 - 29,000 lbs.  The 7.3 has 2 cylinders compressing only 350 lbs, rest are either 390 or 400.  This summer I replaced 2 injectors.  After harvest, my mechanic compression tested it.  The 2 cylinders that are low pressure are #2 & #7, the opposite ends of the bank ends.  Also, the other 6 injectors were probably needed to be changed.  Last fall a freak frayed serpentine belt cut the 6spd trans cooler lines while driving loaded on the interstate destroying the clutch & tranny.  So, my insurance helped paid for most of the new clutch & 6spd.  After that, the 7.3L started running warmer than usual.  I managed to get thru harvest with it, but often had to drop a gear & run the cab heater to help control the temp.  Until the compression test, I thought it may just have a air bubble in the coolant.  But thats a negative.

The long and short of this story is that it has become my winter project.  I have a local shop where the mechanic knows desiels very well.  So, I have chosen him to swap the worn 7.3L with a used 1996 5.9L 12v 215hp cummins out of a 170,000 mile donor Dodge truck.  This engine has the P7100 fuel injection pump coupled with the regular injectors.  I have been told that the cummins engines are good for 500,000 - 750,000 miles.  And, that it should be capable of 275hp without replacing stock injectors?  My 7.3L was pulling 230hp stock.  It was not supertuned.  I hope the 5.9L couples good with the 4.10 rear gears in my Ford.  I will share photos and specs when it gets completed.

Just wondering for those of you out there that have them, as I've been reading.

What are you guys who are running the 2000-2007 Chevy 2500's getting on fuel mileage? Gas or Diesel? Looking at one of these as the next truck.

Morton a 03 2500 with 6.0 and 4:10 gears will get 14 empty on a good day and maybe 8 pulling a load, but has plenty of power and very reliable.

morton,
I've got a 2500 with a 6.0,  right at 11-12 mpg average use in the winter, short trips and warm up, 15 if I have perfect conditions on a trip, absolutly perfect and keep my foot out of it.   8-10  pulling average loads of 4000-10,000 pounds etc. with some empyt traveling.  It's no economy queen, but I sure like the 6.0

I've also got an 06 Duramax 2500, 13-14 useing it for average short trips and pulling and a little work, and 19 average on a trip, 21 in perfect conditions.

Both are extended cab short box trucks with regular 265 or 245 X 75 X 16 (I can't rember which) Firestone Transforce tires.  The tires don't last verry long on the Duramax.

We were purchasing LOTs of trucks in that time frame but my memory gets a bit foggy so some my so-called "facts" here may off a bit.
Most if not all of the 94.5 DIT diesels were marked Turbo Diesel on the fender but the shroud over the filter area said "Powerstroke". We owned 4-5 of them and still have one running. As you said for a while you could get either BUT it depended on which transmission you wanted. You could get a 5 Speed behind the very first DIT engines but quickly some issues developed with the Z5 and Getrag gave Ford heartburn over warrenty so they stopped building them. I had one of the very first model year 1995 badged Powerstroke 250s built and I could not get a manual transmission, that almost caused me to get a Chevy. For a short while if you wanted a manual transmission turbo diesel you got a Turbo IDI , if automatic you got the DIT engine. An interesting aside is that the "factory" turbo IDI is nothing more than a Hypermax aftermarket kit with "Ford turbo diesel" or something  cast into the intake boot. I think Ford did make a couple small internal changes in the turbo engine, nothing major.

the 93/94 Ford 7.3L IDI turbo diesels had ATS kits I believe. I have also seen the early PS with turbo diesel badges. My 2 1984 Lincoln Mark VII have the same Turbo Diesel badge on the trunk. Kinda neat to see recycling.

What are you guys who are running the 2000-2007 Chevy 2500's getting on fuel mileage? Gas or Diesel? Looking at one of these as the next truck.
