Rescue by Allis 45

Acronym to follow - Been there done that  BTDT

I'm in the process of desilting a pond (dam in our terms) with an excavation of about 4000 cu yards.  

Rules for starters - never work out on the silt as you'll break through.  BTDT

These ponds have batters of about 3:1, so as you skim around the edges you're working on a slope.  BTDT

Which crawlers don't like with the downside track full of mud.  BTDT

So you have a fine line between getting a blade part full out and ending up not being able to bail out, as the batters are hard and well greased with mud.  And when you get to about 3 foot mud level the bottom layer is about right for pottery clay.  BTDT

Our FA 10 has a straight tilt blade, which is magic for getting the silt up at almost impossible angles, and you might have to rock between float and up to get traction at the top of the batter.  But at 10 feet wide there is not a lot of room for error as the tracks are pretty close to the mud.  An angle blade at 13'6 would have some more latitude but would have to be made to tilt.

Which error I made on the last pass yesterday.  With about an hour of daylight.  And possible storms.  Fortunately on a corner.

RESCUED BY OUR aLLIS 45 GRADER.

With the timeframe photos were not a priority.

And no storms either.

Keeps my record intact - one desilted dam, one bogged dozer.

I'll work on some photos later.

	BTDT I was repairing a pond with my HD5G. I went down the bank and was cutting a path thru 3 ft of silt by lifting a bucket full and working a large pile of silt to the far side. While in the trench the track came off. I was unable to pull the HD5 out as the trench filled with water. The repair involved my trash pump, a shovel, and fixing the track in the mud. I did the same thing years earlier using my M dozer with an "armstrong" starter. I stalled it in the trench with the blade covering the hole for the starting crank. Shovel, Dig, Mud Mud Mud BTDT

	CTUCKER Needs must at times. Dragline would be fine, but rarer than rocking horse output in our vicinity. Then we could go excavator or loader but don't have either. And $ is short. Looks like we've found the corner that will let me get to the flat of the bottom, where the dozer has a more equal chance than in the 3:1 batters. More when I know more

	Years back I did a de-silting of a trout stream with my HD5G - worked but was quite a job of trying to push silt up and out . Few years later did same stream again - well until DNR can in and stopped owner as silt was washing down stream. He got a permit and then a drag-line in to complete and I used my D6-9U to push spoils from drag-line out and into surrounding areas. What was odd is property was owned by a County Judge and when the DNR showed up he pleaded ignorance on the fact he needed a DNR permit to work on stream bed.
