Why on some of the styled WCs does the exaust go through the hood and on others it goes out the side like the unstyled versions?
I ask because I was just looking at buying a exaust manifold and saw a pic of a styled WC with no hole in the hood and the exaust coming out the side. My tractor was molested pretty bad and they had cut the hood and welded a pipe on the exaust so the exaust would clear the loader arms. But it looks like there was never a hole in the hood to begin with. Did some styled tractors come like this with the exaust going out the side? Does it make a difference if its designed for kero? I think the manifold thats on there was (at one time) a duel fuel manifold?
What, if any, are the major differences (besides the manifold) between tractors that could run kero/gas and the tractors that were designed to run straight gas?

I think most of them that go through the hood were farmer engineered because the new manifold they could buy was for a WD or a 45. So you replaced the original manifold with what was available.

My dad bought a 1942 . IT had exhaust out the side. I think he had two peices that bolted on mainfold with four bolt , one with a K and one with a G. Iremember one had a baffle in it to make it run hotter .he tried it both ways. With kersene you had to drain a qt of oil and add back every morning and had less power run hotter. He busted out the baffle and never run kersene again. IT had no electric at all. He wore out three sets off steel and two sets of rubber on it and still did,nt use oil.

This informat6ion came from my Parts book and operating directions manual for Allis Chalmers Model WC Tractor form T465H 6-39 for tractors serial number 74330 and up. Also the third page of manual has the code used for ordering parts by telegram. Can not find any printing date. Manifolds stamped K were for Kerosene and came out the side. Manifolds

Ok to clarify all of this before I buy it, a 1939 A-C WC had the exaust coming out the side? Whats a decent price for one of these exaust manifolds?
There is a side discharge manifold on ebay but they want $239 + shipping which is a little much in my books.

My parts book shows that from engine serial # 106509 (late 1940) and up the gas engine manifolds were straight up only, they didn't have the side cover that came out at an angle, so I would say the 1939 would go either way. Maybe try to find a good used one.

The difference in the engines would be the compression ratio would be higher for the gas than for all fuel. I would guess yours originally would have been an all fuel K engine and should have the side exhaust. There might be a few usable originals out there. If you find a used one, keep in mind machining costs to mill the head mating surface flat before reassembly. Somewhere I have seen a picture of an all fuel WD with the side exhaust and no hole in the hood. Edited by CTuckerNWIL - 16 Apr 2011 at 10:29pm |
