This tractor has appeared for sale on a NZ website. At first glance it looks to me like a model CA but no tractors of this model came to NZ. I know the photo isn't very clear but can forum members make out whether it's a genuine CA axle ? Maybe it's a wide front off a WD or WD45 ?

How can you be 100% sure none ever came ? You wouldn't believe how easy it is to import/export 'stuff', especially 20,30 40 years ago......

We have a list of the original owners compiled by the NZ distributors. No CA's appear on this list and I haven't heard of any recent importations. |

I noted the wheel centre of the tyre leaning against the wall, too. So Dave, you're saying there was a wide adjustable axle for the model C ? |

Learn something new every day. I didn't think there was an adjustable front axle for a model C but I've just found a photo of one in Norm's book. Thanks for the comments.

Somebody enlighten us on the front wheel centers. They look like a cast wheel center.
The fenders are different too. |

Charlie, I'm too far away (wrong island) to view the tractor but I think the front axle centres are off the early B's (1938 and 1939) The fenders are home made.
Because we think the front axle is factory made, I hope the tractor doesn't get an one way ticket to China. Current bidding stands about one third of scrap price. ![]() |

Do I see an extra hole in the hood in the second pic and is that a starting tank where the battery goes? I'd sure like to have those seat springs and a piece of the material if it's original.

Eric, the wheel center can be bolted on either direction cupped in or cupped out so the one leaning against the wall could go on either side and still have the tyre facing the "right" direction. The spacing would be wider mounted on the left.

Most of the model C's that you find in WA and surrounding states are wide fronts or single fronts. I have 4 or 5 wide front C's, 4 single front C's and one narrow front C. The wide front alone should be worth $3-400. Good luck!

I was wondering about the cast front wheels also, I never saw anything like that except on a G. Could someone have imported it themselves. Maybe got fed up with the US and immigrated to NZ. Or maybe just built it out of odds and ends AC parts. It would be shame to send it to China.

It might be that New Zealand had import laws like Australia. If you were to import a Studebaker, since the starter and generator could be purchased in Australia you could not import them with the vehicle. So if there was a manufacturer that made front wheels to fit, maybe you could not bring in the Allis wheels.

No CA cultivator mounting bosses in the radiator shroud. Definately C wide front.

JohnCO, I have 2 1938 B's with cast front wheel centres so I think it's like you said, a tractor made with many AC parts.
Charlie, NZ import laws weren't like Australia's. Our AC came fully assembled but had to contend with high tariffs (making them pricey) to protect English Fordsons and Internationals from competition. I think I have a local (to the tractor)interested in buying it. To save it from scrap. I may do a deal later if transport can be arranged ? |
