Wayne, If all you need is the shaft they are the same as a gaser, The bearing is the same as a gas too, The carrier is what is diff. That mite make the hunt less painfull. LOL

My WD-45 diesel has the word DIESEL cast into the rear bearing casting. Because the gearing is different than the gas, I think that the PTO shaft is slightly lower than the gas version. If you use the gas rear bearing holder the shft may be slighly out of alignment.

When I used Phil Browns pto box and shaft to dyno mine. The box has a larger shaft coming out of it than a gas. The Shaft carier bearing is taller with diesel cast into it. And the shaft has a larger coupler to go ove the larger shaft from the pto Box.

i dont know where you people are coming up with a different carrier bearing p/n between the 45 gas and the 45D.according to the official allis ipc, they are the same p/n 227230 on both tractors.the shafts are the same p/n 222663 how ever the gear boxes are different the gas tractors primary p/n is 224653 with several tractor s/n differences.the 45d p/n is 227224.also the 45D IDLER GEAR(18 TOOTH) P/N U3236 AND THE GAS P/N IS 203236 ALSO 18 tooth these parts may all be the same made into a stronger part with an upgraded p/n...hope this helps someone none of my diesels have DIESEL stamped on them

The carrier is indeed different for the diesel and has the word DIESEL cast right into it. The part numbers are different; gas-222646, diesel-227230.

Both cast pieces, the sliding gear and the shims are different on the main PTO drive as well.  The PTO shaft and bearings are the same, but you can't start with a set up from a gas and convert it for use on a diesel.  You can put one from a gas on a diesel though, it will just turn the wrong speed when the engine is operating at optimal RPM.  And if you use the front from one and the rear from the other then the bearings will be stressed because the shaft will be higher on one end.  Tom

So can I take a gas pto box, shaft, and bearing holder and put it on a diesel Rear end that has none of that? And will it turn faster or slower than a factory setings? My diesel rear has a gas 226 motor in it.

If you have a gas 226 motor then you should use a gas PTO since that is what the ratio is set up for.  The diesel rear will slow your tractors ground speed down but has no effect on the PTO.  Mating a diesel PTO and a gas motor would have a slower turning PTO.  The diesel motor is supposed to run a higher RPM so it needs to be geared down for the PTO and has a different rear end ratio as well to make ground speed similar to the gas.  I hope I have this worded right - I find it easy to write one thing and mean another, and I always read just what I think I wrote so proof reading is not possible.  Tom

This is getting fun. LOL
I am with you on most of what you said here but this part of it.
I didn't say that the carrier bearing is different, I said that the carrier bearing housing was different. The housing part number for WD45-D is 227230 and the housing for WD/WD45 gas is 222646. (>:

WD-45 gas with 226 engine is rated at 1400 RPM.
WD-45 Diesel with 230 engine is rated at 1625 RPM.
The PTO gear ratios are different so the you get 540 PTO speed at the rated engine RPM.
Same goes for the crown and pinion ratio. Different ratios to get the same ground speed at rated engine RPM's.  The Crown and pinion ratio in the WD-45 diesel is the same as all D-17's.

Our 1955 45D is like Tom's pic. It is longer from the holes to the shaft centerline, the amount escapes me.

From memory I think the centerline is about 3/8 lower.  I know we welded up the holes in gasser hanger and redrilled it so it would work on the diesel.  I think that was the one which came in with a pillow block bearing mounted to a piece of angle iron.  It worked okay but was not pretty.  So--Wayne, your choices are wide open....Dale :)
