The adjuster bolts (3/4 hex) on my XT  cant be tightened like they are bottomed out. What needs to be done to lessen the free travel on the pedals?

Sounds like the pads are bottomed out? Have you removed the cover to inspect them? Wear a mask, nasty stuff in there. I replaced mine several years ago due to that issue. Cleaned the balls and ramps also. I have great brakes now. They are external!!! So much easier to work on.

OK, should I plan to replace the disks shaped lining and the bands at the same time?

You can shorten the brake rods at the front if you want, but your brake linings are probably about shot and you don't want to have a metal to metal situation. $$$$$$.

Thanks for the input. Ill get it torn down and looked over. I'll put it back together best I can so it will stop good for as long time as possible.
