In response to Claus asking about other brands you'd own, I ask what is the worst tractor you have ever been around?
For me it would be my bosses 1490 case. It is a operators nightmare, and a hydrolic basketcase. I hate it.

When I was a kid our neighbors had a 7520 John Deere. I farmed lots of acres of rough irrigated ground with it. It was hard to shift and a very rough ride. My kidneys still hurt.

I tried out a Belarus once, couldn't figure out the gear shift (kind of like a road ranger, but worse) and just wasn't impressed with the workmanship.
I think the worst tractor I owned was a David Brown 1200, which I think the Case 1490 is an updated model. It would loose it's hydralic system prime, the pto clutch was a 2 stage system with a hand lever to engage. If you left the lever unengaged for very long the throwout bearing would go bad and other clutch parts would then go south. It only had 6 forward speeds and was hard to shift. It did start good in cold weather and didn't burn fuel fast tho. |

An MF garden tractor. Years ago when I worked as a lawn mower mechanic, we got this MF (pre Snapper days) in on trade. This thing ate ignition coils. We never did figure out why ignition coils didn't last long on it. It got returned once after I had put several coils on it. We sold it cheap to a guy passing through who was looking for cheap riding mowers. That MF garden tractor convinced me that "MF" absolutely did not stand for "Mighty Fine".

That would have to be a John Deere 350 crawler that we bought to do custom work with. THAT John Deere nearly broke us!!

Beyond a doubt, Brockway. Was worthless as a tractor, probably even worse than 8N or 9N, hydraulics far worse than ford, wouldn't start in coldweather
was chain drive which broke frequently, and one rear axle broke just outside case. Other than that, it was good. LOL Of course being the youngest, I always got the priveldge of using it.

I know Mr. Douglas had a lot of problems with his Hoyt-Clagwell. The Hoyt-Clagwell company went out of business 40 years ago, because Mrs. Hoyt and Mrs. Clagwell couldn't get along. Since then, Hoyt went into the wax fruit business, and Clagwell went to the county seat.

I hate to say it but my 7040 was a lemon when I bought it 30 years ago. Its the hardest starting tractor I"ve ever owned, hot or cold. The pump was redone, new injectors, a boat load of batterys, seemed like a new alternator every other year. A mechanic mentioned some of the early ones were not timed correctly even though they were up to spects. It also has no power. Had it tested.....126hp. Allways struggled with a 12 row planter. Hyd. fluid changes cavities on its own. Drain it out of one plug, put it back in the the power director fill hole. The hi/low button won't kick into hi until it's good and ready, usually about 15 minutes of road travel. Other than that it has a good stereo. You probally say hey Bob, why keep it? Good question. Anybody need a good 7040? Our 7060 has been a sweet ride(bad power shift). |

The wifes Dad has an 8N & a neighbor a 9N, both the most usless tractors I have ever operated. I tell my FIL it is good to fetch in the cows or go for the mail, altho it worked OK to haul 5 or 6 small bales of hay out to the cows, since he wouldn't dare use his pickup for that...Harvey

I used to HATE the neighbors 770 Olivers. When I had to run them(about age 10-12) they always howled to loud to hear the fender mount radio and the brakes either didn't work or they would lock up. I'm sure the brake thing was improper or lack of maintenance. Now days I kinda like the smoothness of the inline 6's.

A John Deere 60 was it for me. It was the jumpiest, clumsiest thing I ever drove. After growing up with WD's, I had a hell of a time getting used to pushing the hand clutch to engage it instead of pulling it back.

When I was a sophomore or Junior in high school, Dad traded in the Massey 65 diesel for a Ford 4000. I hated that tractor, My feet would not reach the floor boards and just dangled. Dave.

Worst tractor (series) ever made was no doubt the international British tractors. The B 275, B404, 414, 424, and the construction versions, the 2404, 2414, 2424! Most under- powered, hard to find parts for, even when new, bathtubs full of gears, ever devised to drive a mechanic to drink ! But, hey, that's just my $.02

I use to work for a guy that had a 70 horse power case ,it was the model that looked like the david brown 995 I think they were daivid brown tracters with case decals on them,I HATED that tractor it was the most uncomfortable thing I ever drove. The seat was junk it wasn t that handy to the controls,it did have some power but it seemed like there was always something going wrong on it . I have used alot of different tractors over the yrs but that one stands at the top of my bad list

our 175 M.F. was a pain to work on seemed there was to much stuf in the way to fix anything on it. pulling tractor (in the field ) would be our8330 J.D. can't get the traction then when you gear up high enought to pull ,if it lugs a little the computer will shut it down. and I mean at1450 rpm. it shuts the motor off. sorry but i'm old school.

Thumb I agree with you on the massey's they seem to have alot of power and not to bad for comfort but to work on them you need to take so much off to get to anything .I found that with the john deere's as well .I think the allis's and the farmall are in my opinion the easiest to work on with the easiest access to the engines.

Dad literally wore out an 8N Ford, and went to AC ! We did have a MF1080 w/ multi-grade transmission, which is a death trap, esp. for this mountain country, always out of gear going downhill!!! Never did like those old Ford and MF clutch and brake pedals, having to push straight down( had to stand up to stop 'em ), rather than forward down like AC tractors!

Amen. My Grandad tried one out and wound up trading it back to the dealer for the 6060. The 6060 is 10 times the tractor.

JD 60 . put my hand up at an auction, when I should have shut up. It had a cracked manifold when I got it. I replaced that then for some reason in stuck up in the garage. had to remove head to loosen, could see no reason why it stuck. Ran it around a little bit and put it back in the shed. the next time i went to use , the starter wouldn't kick in. I haven't tackled that job yet. I bought it to see why people really love John Deeres, but still haven't found out.
