Dose anyone have experience with the tool that puts a mixture of propane and oxygen in the holes and ignites it? What is the kill rate and how loud is it? Or maybe a better idea how to get rid of them.

I think it's used more for mole control than groundhogs.
I think it's rather expensive, however.

Try connecting a hose from your tractor exhaust to inside the groundhog hole, put some dirt around it, let the tractor run for 20 minutes, remove the hose. |

Why is there never time to do it right the first time, but always time to go back and fix it?

We used to have a big problem with them. They would burrow into the creek bank and come up in the yard. We tried shooting them but another would always come and take over. Finally we put about 5 gallons of water down the hole followed by about 2 gallons of gasoline, threw a match in the top hole after a few minutes and WHOOSH!!! a flaming groundhog shot out the creek entrance of the hole. Never had a problem after that.

Not too many woodchucks left in this part of NY State; coyotes keep them and rabbits in check.
Back in the 50s and 60s, guys used to "ride the roads" in the evenings shooting woodchucks, My brother shot over 300 one summer with nothing more than 22 hollow points. I mean "cut off their tails" kills. It will keep your shooting skills up to par.
My Dad had a mongrel dog once that when she was in her prime would kill as many as 5 or 6 a week. Sometimes we had to give her a hand if she got one cornered in a stone wall. I believe they breed at what ever rate they need to keep their area at maximum population. Seemed that no matter how many you killed, the population remained fairly stable back in those days.

Around here it seems like population has gone up since the 80's. I don't remember ever seeing a ground hog when I was a kid in the 50's and 60's. Now they aren't thick, but if any buildings set unused for any period of time, they find a place to dig.

A 220 conibear trap works wonders. Years ago I caught 12 groundhogs out of one hole in one summer along a soybean field.

a friend of mine took an nh3 wagon out to one of his sidehills, dug down, put an adapter on the hose and let it run awhile. what he didn't know was that that piticular tank was used for a grain dryer and was full of propane! i wasn;t there, but he said he shut off the hose and pulled the hose out, threw his cigarette on the ground and about leveled that hill!

243 with 100 grain. Either that, or if they're in the middle of the field, my pap takes the liquid slurry spreader and fills the hole up. That works too.

I used a whole package of gofer grenades. just light one and drop in each hole then cover the hole. kills em dead. I used cardboard and rocks to cover the hole. if you leve the hole open the smoke escapes.

Black net wrap stuffed in holes & ground shoveled on top I'm told works well. I told my loving wife if I don't come in for supper after feeding round bales to come looking for me, I'll probably be tangled up in net wrap & can't get up. She wondered why she would want to come looking, maybe I should take some lessons from Shameless...Harvey

I don't know about bubble gum , but I know juicy fruit gum works. I was infested with them & I lightly chewed a couple sticks & put it on a board in front of their hole & it got rid of all of them . I don't know what it does , but it worked for me. It's a long story on how I found out, but I learned this from a nurse in the hospital.
