I'm looking for a set of latches for my WD45. Willing to rebuild. I saw the set on eBay - they are two styles and I'd like a matched set. I know....some people are just too fussy! Thanks.

there are more than 2 styles, some may have all variations. 4 or 5 I believe without loops, plus CA and 190. I am pretty sure you mean with and without the loop.

Yes - of the pair advertised on eBay, one had the flap and the other had a square loop. I'd like to find a pair that would have been used on the WD45 and are of the same design.
Did some designs work better than others?

I assume with each "revision" they were strengthened and improved. they were fabricated completely, fabbed and some parts cast(using up left over parts?), then both pieces cast, then loops added for rigidity with a bar. There are are probably other differences that experts can detail.
   I would like to know more about CA and 190. If 190 is bigger/rarer, I know where a 190 SC and 190XT are going to scrap.
    I mentioned this because you said 2 alike, you will have to look close in pictures

I have a set of HD latches with the bar for a 190/D19 and a matched set of WD/WD45 latches that can be for sale the old WD/WD45 latches need some work done to them and the price will flex this. LOL The 190/D19 latches are in grate shape and painted too.

Here's a picture of mine that I just redone.  Bought the latches on EBAY a year ago for 36 bucks. Sandblasted, painted (corp orange), added new hardware.  You can get the hardware in a kit from Mike Snyder in N Robinson, Ohio.  He is on this page every now and then.  Search ffor the kit on EBAY also

I got new springs for my lift latches at Ace Hardware,$4 bucks a pair.
Why do today what you can put off til tomorrow.

Somebody correct me if I am wrong but, was the latch pictured(Larry's) only available after the D17 was introduced? I have a set of these on my 45. They came out of a shed where a 17 was stored along with a SC 9' blade.

That's my plan, Larry. I'm not sure which design is correct for the '45, though, Charlie. I have the style Larry is showing on my D14.

Just checked my Feb. 1957 `45 parts book, and it shows 3 different designs used on the WD/ WD45.  The first design appears to be all steel, used prior to 1954.  The second design is steel with cast covers used Jan 54 thru March `55.  The third design is all cast, used April `55 thru June `56.  Hope this helps.  None have the bottom loops  as seen on the D17 for the solid  connecting bar between the latches.

Anyone who has a bunch of different ones should take pics and post them for each type.  Others people could keep adding more pics for the various types.  Then maybe we could convince Brian Ahart to put an lift arm latch ID section on his web site along with the tractor weights section.   Mike

Does anybody know if the ones like Larry's pic are cast or are they steel forgings? I don't see how cast would hold up very well.

Don, I know what the steel ones look like although I never realized they put the "cast" cap on a steel base. I still can't believe the newer ones were cast iron. A forged steel part can look like a cast part depending on the condition of the dies, but if it is forged steel it would be way stronger. I guess I'll have to go do the grinding wheel test on the latches on the 45. Better yet, why doesn't someone voluteer to take their blue flame wrench to a set. If they don't cut up, we'll know they are cast Iron.

They are cast steel not cast iron. I didn't mean to come across sounding like they where cast iron. Don
