Can anyone tell me what model rake this is? I can't find an ID tag anywhere or anything.

I'm not the expert on the newer rakes, but my guess is that since it's a 4 bar one it is a 77G

yes it is a 77G......The model 78G had a crooked rear axel..77 Is straight. and it could of been either a 4 or 5 bar, the 5 bar was a option.............I have a 77G, and just bought another one this morning.

Was that the only difference between the two was the rear axles? This one needs a part or two for the drive pulley. Anyone have any parts for them?

The purpose of the offset(crooked) axle is by being closer to the basket it will follow ground contour better. At least that's what NH said when they went to the offset axle. I've used both styles of NH rakes and see very little difference. I would like to have a AC rake but since parts are impossible to find I will stick to my old NH 55 rake.

My neighbor has a 77 rake and the clutch is shot on it. They put a hose clamp on it to keep it engaged and just derail the belt to take it down the road if they have to. I've been after him for years to let me tear it apart and make a new clutch for it. He just says , "it's no big deal, works OK like it is."

Well, per my 77G manual, it lists tire sizes as: 5x15, 5.90x15, 6.40x15 and 6.70x15. I'd have to go out and look at mine to see what size tires are on it, if you are interested. Let me know. Dave

You have the later model 77G as others have said because it has the belt drive like the 78G. The early 77G had a chain drive to a gearbox that was on the basket similar the the New Holland setup. HTH. Don Jr.

I put the 5th bar in my 77G, then went to larger tires. Better traction, and it slowed the rake a bit which was OK with the fifth bar. I had the same problem with the clutch wearing out and solved it the same way. I used muffler clamps and took them loose when I needed to go down the road.
I also have a 77M with all new teeth.

I checked the tire sizes on my 77G rake. One was apparently an old vehicle P195/75-R15 and the other an old truck tire 78-15. I don't know how all these crazy tire sizes translate, but the 78-15 stands a little higher than the other throwing off the level adjustment. I also have a 77M. The tires were shot on it when I got it and I found a couple NOS 16x6.50-8 tires and put them on. Manual says to use a 4.0 - 8 size tire, so don't know how this affects the operation of the rake. I have had trouble with the lift arms of the rake popping out of the tractor lift arm latches. Don't know if this is due to uneven ground surface, tires/tire adjustment or something else, but usually just use my 77G instead. It is a nice working rake. Dave

We had one that looked just like that except it was chain drive, good ole rake, sold it to a man down the road, still going strong.

Maybe a couple reasons, cheaper first and second, it might lend to a "softer" drive in case something needed to slip. Just my guess.

You can change the speed of a belt drive by moving shims on the sheaves. HTH Tracy |
