the volt light came on- alt was squealing- took to town- tested at 11volts- was an delco with only the one wire wired- the prongs were sealed by a rubber piece- was working fine until the other day
they tested the new one with just the one wire- 12 volts with the prongs hooked- 15 with the prongs hooked on mine- still 11 i took the new one home- light still on- maybe needs to run for a while? i had it running about 20 minutes? what else could be wrong? a voltage regulator? where is it on the tractor?

SOMEONE replaced the oem alt with a one wire which is ok, the plug keeps one from trying to plug in wires, however the prongs are there it is just connected to the rt terminal 12v and the other is diode switched; the reason it was squealing was belt was loose, battery or wire is bad and calling for max output is my guess. Of course the alt only put out 12 v w/o wires connected that is what it is supposed to do. The reason the light is on is probably the reason the alt you pulled off was squealing - the batt is not taking a charge or is shorted? Just a possibility from experience.
