started working on wd-45D today, has a standard NF, there is quite a bit of play insteering wheel, before wheels move, is this adjusted by shimming out the shaft that the worm gear is attached to ??

You may be able to remove some shims from behind the bearing retainer, but the most play is prolly in the u joint.
