Here's another opinion poll: Of all the A-C's made throughout the years, which model is the most dependable & toughest of them all?

My vote would have to be the WD.
'49 A-C WD, '51 A-C WD, '63 A-C D17 Series III, 1968 A-C One-Seventy, '82 A-C 6060, '75 A-C 7040, A-C #3 sickle mower, 2 A-C 701 wagons, '78 Gleaner M2

I think the wc, wd ,wd45 are hard to beat. That engine survived a long time and was easy to work on and very affordable to fix the ce engine was a very good engine there are still alot of wc's wd's wd45's and b'c and ca's around which speaks volumes about those two engines

WD - WD45 probably oldest, with such popularity, and with the numbers produced, shows the AC Toughness.  Many people have that tractor image/model in mind with AC... photos, posters, shirts.....

But Dad's old 1968 AC170D is on it's 4 tach,  smoking....but cranked this cold  week....12,000+hrs...most from the hard working Dairy and Silage years!  It's been a Tough Tractor, very dependable, generally low maintenance costs all these years too!

+ 1 what NC Bruce said.

WD45 first place.
But,
My 1968 AC170 gas has 5600 hours on it and never been apart.  It looks like it will outlast me.

A WC has to be the most durable, dependable, and breakproof Allis ever made.

Its the simplest tractor Allis ever made, there is not much to break.  Allis had the fortune of developing probably the best engine in the history of its hp class and sticking it in the WC.

I've had more maintenance issues with the WD than the WC when working them hard.  Mainly the hydraulics and hand clutch - WC's don't have those, hence no issues.  LOL
There isn't much a WC can't do.

WD's just do it better.

B. Nothing you can't fix yourself, at least so far, for me! Only thing I've ever had to do to any of them is change tires, repair a rim, and add toys like implements and duel hydraulics! Although their was the fuel problem once that was operator error...I wasn't the operator at the time...LOL

D17 series III has been on our farm since new has done it all and still going strong was the biggest tractor on the farm when new, My dad has owned all kinds and driven all kinds and has JD's also but he will tell you real fast that the most reliable tractor he has ever been around has to be this D17!!!

Have to be the WC WD and WD45s. All hard to beat in my opinion. They were designed with durability, simplicity, and reliability in mind. Such versatility in such a simple package. A little TLC for that old iron kept them running, as we can all atest..running a very long time! Many still going today. Wish machines of today were created in that way. We live in a throw away society. My 2 cents.

This is hardly a fair question. My 1936 WC is 39 years older than my 1975 7060 and it's still going, but by the time it was 30 years old (1966) it wasn't the main tractor on the farm, with no electrics or hydraulics it was only used for odd jobs till it finally ended up just setting (thankfully inside) replaced by tractors that were more powerful more comfortable and more convienient to use.

I'd argue that while my 7060 may or may not be around in 40 years, it is still a working tractor at age 35 and has plenty of life left. It has been overhauled once but otherwise it hasn't needed much done to it. She's certainly done more work than the WC ever did. Is it "tougher" I don't know.

A WD or WD45 are good little tractors, my Dad used to say "Dollar for dollar and pound for pound there isn't a better tractor than a WD45!". In my opinion a D17 is better. My series IV D17 is a much better than my WD or the 45. I'd like to add a 170 to my collection and who knows, I might like it better than the series IV.

My 8050 powershift FWA (my favorite) is the pinacle of AC farm tractors, (in my opinion) it's much more complex than any earlier models but it's been reliable and so far it has stood up to the test of time pretty well. It looks good and performs very well for a 26 year old tractor.

You know, I have to agree with all the above - except for the number tractors and others I did not sell.  The WC is probably the most durable tractor Allis Chalmers made.  Simple yet durable.
That is also true of my favorate, the B.  Simple yet durable.
Two of the - in my opinion - must durable tractors made by Allis Chalmers.  In fact, those two units along with the All Crop Harvestor made Allis Chalmers.
Good Luck!

160 is the toughest tractor I have ever used, will start in any weather and is very easy to manuver. I have used it on our dairy for 25 years, very little repairs. I hate to say this but our 190XT was the bigest piece of junk I ever owned, engine was great but spent more time fixing the rest of it than we spent using it.

We have had good luck with all of them really.  Our 190xts really have been good to us.  They have always had more power then they should also.  The wd45 always starts and gets the job done also.  They have all been good!  I like them all!   Different tractors even of the same model can have issues.   One wd will go for tons of hours and the next might have a few breakdowns.  So they are all good!

Of the ones we own the 175d has been very tough even survived an electrical fire and a fire on top of the engine do to lack of cleaning and overheating cause of no temp gauge but still haven't had to touch the engine mechanically. But have been told by a couple who have had them that the 7045 pd was the toughest of all the 7000 series and allis in general.

It would be interesting if the ole WD's would of had hour meters.  Hard to say how many hours some of those racked up back in the day of plowing every acre.

I have said the same thing many times to Dad about the hour meters and how neat it would be to see how many hours the old girls actually had on them. His reply has always been the same. He is thankful they don't because he still feels all those hours and doesn't need to be reminded whenever he sits on their seats.LOL

Dad's 7040 was as tough as any tractor I've ever seen, but I've never been around any AC older than a 190.

We have the d series and a 7050, i have run many other tractors, seems like I always turn the the 17 IV with loader to get the job done, or the 1066, If the TA worked IH would have it made today.

The D-17 series III has been the most reliable tractor on our farm. I drove this tractor the first time when I was 7 years old. (I'm 47 now) When it was newer we did tillage work with it. Then planting, Then raking and baling. Now we use it for loading bales with a Hoelsher bale fork. Loaded about 15000 bales in 2009.  It was overhauled 10 years ago and almost no problems since.
