I hate to keep beating the issue but the more I look at the paint the more I see it really does need a professional paint job. Some of it is almost acceptable but the fender tops, fuel tank and lots of other places are way too far gone in my opinion. What do you guys think. I know it's mine and I can do whatever but I like hearing other thoughts. Thanks, Dana

Have to agree on those fender tops,Capt. Original paint is best in my opinion, looks like vertical surfaces are much better. Is the paint original?? You are going to "shed" the tractor, maybe get home, do complete cleaning, and reevaluate at that time. I'm thinking of preserving area's that need protection, maybe someone knows how to do that without doing complete job, and not ending up with a "motled" looking machine.

I'm in the camp of leaving original paint on whenever you can. But in this case, I believe I would go for some new paint. Check all the seals for leaks, make sure it's mechanically acceptable, and then get some Persian Orange #2 on it! But you're right, it's yours so do whatever you want.

I would think leave it. Once you start using it that rust wears down and doesn't look as bad. That is a low hour tractor for its age. Everyone of those rusty marks is part of its history. Kinda like the scars on your own hands and body. If your worried it will look bad for resale, Just don't ever sell it.
Tractors that need painting are the ones that are pieced together from 4 other donor tractors.This is a nice unit with all its original parts. Seems to me fate meant it to stay that way.

There is enough faded and surface rust on it that I would go ahead and paint it. My 185 had nice paint, but a lot of scratchs that were rusty. I tried to touch up paint just the rusty scratchs, it looked worse, so I went ahead and painted the tractor. looks much beter now. You wont be happy until it gets painted!! Good luck |

Eddie, Your restoration pic on your 190xt looks great. Did you change out the snap couplers on your 190xt's grill for the rubber truck hood couplers? I can't quite see it close enough for sure?

Eric...Unfortunately, the original grille met an untimely end, when it got too close to the rearend of a combine, and that is actually a fiberglass repo grille, and those are the rubber latches that came with it. Thanks for the compliment, Eddie

paint it and make it look new again! you'll be glad you did. The only time keeping original paint in my opinion is when the tractor still looks almost as good as new, you know pampered low hour liitle old lady from pasadena owned! LOL! I see people patch paint, and I think it looks worse sometimes. original is original! patch painting takes away the originality.

I'm with all you guys. Eddie seeing that pic is gonna really drive me nuts cause I can't get the XT home till the snow melts off the mountain trail leading to that pole barn. What an amazing looking beast. Yup real easy to fall in love lol. Skip I have tried to refuel at SUX and meet you and some day it will happen. 90% of the time I quick turn in DBQ or DSM or DVN in Iowa or down in Ne at GRI or LNK or LBF about 10% of the time. They are about half way between my Saratoga home base and Salt Lake City; I do those runs almost bi monthly. Shoot me your cell number sometime. Final answer....she's getting painted!

Leave her alone. Just spend as much time in the seat as you can with your elbow resting on the fender and in no time she will be nicely polished. Better yet send her down to me and I will polish her up with my elbow. I figure about a year will just about do it.

I'd give it a new dress but don't get in a hurry. Use it for a year, find all the little things that need fixin. Clean it up, find the leaks make sure the engine , clutches and drive train are good. The last thing you want to do is split a freshly painted tractor. That also gives you some time to have some fun with it.
