What size 6V battery are you guys running in your D14? Just picked up a D14 and don’t have an owners manual yet. I have a 800 CA, 650 CCA in my WD assuming that will work? Or did the later models get switched to 12V?

My Dad was an Allis Dealer back then when the D-14's came out in 1957. During the cold winter months you were lucky to get 3 revolutions of the Engine before it just stopped. Release the key, then try again and hope for another 3 It is very important to have extra heavy duty cables, both + and - . Something as heavy as Welder Cable is best. Definitely not cables meant for a 12 volt system. The higher the CCA the better in cold weather, won't do any harm. Gary |

I have a couple 6 volt tractors that had 8 volt batteries in them when I bought them. They start a lot better than 6 volt.
I know there are going to be comments about keeping terminals clean and equipping them with big battery cables, but like Gary said, you're lucky to get three revolutions out of 6 volts, especially after the battery is a couple years old. After having tractors with 8 volt batteries, I will probably never buy another 6 volt battery.

I've had 4 D-14s ,3 early 6 v and one later 12v All the sixes had a metal band to cover the brushes and you can't toss a 12 into a 6 ! My ,snif, sniif, ONLY D-14 I have now has a brand new 6 volt starter though I run it at 12 volts. Had I been real smart I'd have kept the one 12v D-14. To proper convert you need a 12v starter AND a new ring gear. You may want to consider that option when you replace the clutch........ If you stay with 6 volt, use battery cables made from welding cable. Big, fat, thick, and check acid level OFTEN. Also be sure battery is FULLY charged. Generators only put a few electrons back into battery,so it days a day of running while alternators can quickly replace the electrons.

Good to hear you found a D 14 Robbie. You'll have to post a picture of it. They are a nice size tractor, and easy to get on and off. Tim

Due to the battery tray & factory hold down you are limited to a Group 1. A group 2 might fit under the hood, but will not set in the battery tray. I also like to use an 8-1 "tractor" battery in anything with a 6 volt system. A careful re-adjustment of the voltage regulator is required to properly charge the battery without blowing light bulbs, I've used Non-polarity LED bulbs to overcome this problem.

If it was fun to pull in LOW gear, I could have a John Deere.
Real pullers don't have speed limits. If you can't make it GO... make it SHINY |

I use 1/0 welding cable and crimp connectors so that’s the first thing that will get done. I’m thinking it’s a 12V system, just need to pull the info off the tag off the generator and call Steve. It’s a 1959 3 bar grill D14 to match my D17. Has the rear running lights which should be 12V. Just getting started with the project so I need to do some research. Changes were made at serial number 19001 so hopefully that was a 12V upgrade. This is a original owner tractor!! Has been sitting in a open front barn it’s entire life with little use. Sheet metal is so nice, original factory brush guard so the front end and grill are perfect. No dents other than 2 small ones on the rear fender down below the lip where he may have lifted something and it hit. Very easy repair. Clutch and brake pedals have most of their grip still there, no side to side slop. Draw bar has very little wear. Tach block off cover so unknown hours unfortunately. But it’s obvious it’s low hours. This will be an easy restoration. Wiring is also in great shape with the colors still visible and no cracks. Serial number starts with 21, can’t remember the rest at the moment. Power washed it yesterday. Uncle passed years ago and the family decided to sell it. Lucky me!!!!!!

Thank you sir! I just verified by taking some steel wool and lightly removing the black paint from the tag on the generator. Breathing a breath of fresh air. When I took the hoods off to clean it yesterday I noticed it had an old 12V battery in it and I about to crap because dad’s 57’ was 6 volt. Hard to find info of serial number changes and what they were. She purrs like a kitten and never took the hoods off while I test drive it. I mean you guys won’t believe how nice it is. Terribly faded paint but otherwise a cherry.

My D14 came from Pen Han, NY and had been converted to 12 volt. Starts with less than one turn of the starter. Herb(GA)

Will be picking up a new battery and welding cable to make some new cables next week. Other than an oil filter and fluid changes, a new set of plug wires, not a lot to be done on this ole girl as far as maintenance items. Looking forward to using it to see what it may need.
