I’ve been offered up a United in real rough condition here in Australia. Were all pre 1932 U’s built with United radiator top tanks? The machine I am looking at was a running tractor offered to a museum many years ago and has since been left outside for years. The current owner obtained it from the museum as he was sick of seeing it rotting away. No real progress has been made so this is where I am looking at stepping in.

Not all of the Continental Us had United on the tank - it seems to depend what dealer network they were sold through. United seems to have dissolved sometime in 1930, so the later ones were all A-C. Naturally, over the last 90 years or so, the radiator tanks have been swapped both directions as needed.

Thankyou for that I have a 1937 U but honestly here in Australia I have never seen another United. I have seen another Continental U but it was Allis branded. Will hopefully have this one home in a few weeks and assess it's condition and work out where to start.

Looking at the sheetmetal, that Tractor for its age and being outside is pretty darn straight! The gas tank doesn't look to have a dent or gouge in it! Looks like just a lot of surface rust that would either sand off or glassbead off okay. Radiator looks pretty sweet to. No damage. Amazing for how old it is, and being in what looks like a scrap yard! Good luck with it. Looks like a great project Tractor with a lot going for it. Steve@B&B

Looks like that tractor has a lot going for it. Glad you are going to rescue it. Hope you keep us informed of your progress. That yard looks like a good place to poke around for other treasures. Dad took me with him to a junk yard once when I was a child back in the mid 1950's and afterwards I told him that when I grew up I wanted to run a junk yard. I'm sure he was thrilled with my ambition. Just seemed to me that there were a lot of interesting things there. I remember too a yard in Columbus, Ohio in the late 50's that had a bunch of steam locomotives piled up like fire wood; maybe 15 -20 as I recall.

Yeah hoping this isn't going to be too bad, the Magneto looks toast and a few other bolt on items look sad but the bulk of it looks good.

I imagine that there were nothing covering the intake and exhaust somewhere during it's life.Hope there were a drain hole so water would run out before running into the main manifold. Good Luck. It will look sweet along side your A.

I am baffled at the carburetor and manifold. Kerosene? Regular Petrol? Or LPG (Liquid Petroleum Gas).
Looks different than the Kingston on mine.

I am assuming Kerosene as most tractors sold here in the era were to suit kerosene.

Well the United arrived home last night and it is a BIG project, lots of rust and some items I thought Ok were not. I still feel it is better than becoming someone's garden ornament. The fuel tank is full of straw so I assume some rodents living inside which has also caused plenty of rust. The front wheels are worse than first thought with the right hand front rusted right through even claiming a spoke and the left hand one being quite thin. The steering wheel outer rim is gone, bonnet is paper thin and the starter tank is a template only. I will get some more photos over the coming days but I am already making as list of items needed. This is all before we look inside the mechanicals!

Love your pictures. I have seen 1 far worse than that restored. Yes it took cash and a good machinist back in the early 1990's. Go for it. Your probably not going to get a chance to restore another in your lifetime.

That manifold is very rare, have only seen one other like it on a U, and it is in Nebraska.

Very nice looking A, bet you enjoy it a lot. Hope you keep us up to date on the United restoration now that you have our attention. Seems you have at least a couple of rare items on that tractor. I see in the background of a couple of your pictures some AC orange chairs and an unusual, at least to us here in the US, looking automobile. Looks like you may be working on that too. Can you tell us what it is? It's more efficient to have more than one project at a time you know. Thanks for the pictures, Russell.
