I’ve heard some tales over the years about some D19 Diesels that were turned up well over 100hp. so basically I have a 2 part question here.
What is the most HP you have seen or heard about with the factory pump/turbo? Has anyone heard about any set ups using a beefed up pump and bigger turbo? So let’s talk numbers. What have you seen or heard? PS: save the lecture about the bad mechanical stories and what can go wrong. I’m well aware of Budas and their potential problems with longevity. This is just to bring to light the true possibilities of the 262D. I’m just curious, thanks!! Edited by PA185 - 01 Sep 2020 at 3:35am |

110 PTO HP and the head gasket doesn't last very long at all. From experience.

Dr. was this an agco gasket w/rings or a custom setup of yours? I just put our 19 engine back together its in primer right now. We got the parts from Norm several years ago, the headgasket was a 1 piece job and Don B recommended the agco gasket with separate fire rings. I got some fire rings from Mack, and we got a different block. the protrusion is right on so hopefully we will never have to touch it again. It will get used but not real hard.

Terry Wood had a good setup but he was an AC engineer, 110 sounds good for the engine, they just can't handle the abuse

I never knew Terry Wood ever pulled a D-19/D-262 engine. I've seen him pull a 190 XT several times many years ago.

Back in 1971 the late Henry Moody from Iola,KS had a pretty warm D-19 AC puller..It had pump work, bigger turbo,24.5x32's-etc..Knowing what he pulled against in the 7000 lb class it had to be in the 125-150 horsepower range..Needless to say it didnt stay together very good and the next year he pulled a Mod tractor.....There was a 6 mph speed limit back then and he could run it with the D-19.
Also back in the early 1970's there were (4) D-17 AC diesel pullers in my area that pulled the 5500 lb class....They were from Iola,KS,Bronson,KS,Rich Hill,MO,and Golden City,MO...They all had to be in the 100 horsepower range as they were competitive..

Circa 1972......... D262 copper head gasket - oring 'd sleeves 35 mm 4 roller pump Switzer then staged turbos - lots of smoke 7th gear in 5000# 6th gear in 7000 HP ? maybe 200 ? 250 ? Never burnt piston - indirect injection. More fuel never increased hp when we went from 4 roller 31 mm (220 Pump size) ... Zipper Special was named so with reason.... Oh, and used D19 PD clutch to start... in 5 years replaced final drive, trans, torque hsg gears, crank cam... and on and on but it was fun...

Now we're talkin !!! Look at the lug depth on those tires !!! That is one of the reasons todays pullers don't have much (if any) rear end issues. The sleds start easier and the tires have a much shorter lug so you can spin them faster, making the driveline last longer. I like the " more fuel never increased the HP" line...……… They say todays very best Super Stock 3 or 4 turbo diesels make between 3500 and 4000 HP at 270 to 300 psi of boost.

.....and splitting the cylinder blocks in half.... it is out of hand. The fans in the stands can't tell the difference between 'road gear' and 20-30% over. The sleds turn the "pull" into an inertia challenge. So many classes, so many rules - MPH classes.... fun factor gone on the local level.

Agreed.
These SSDiesel tractors I am talking about are turning the rear tires in excess of 90 MPH coming down the track, but they really aren't moving the sled much faster than they did 30 years ago, so the "show" looks about the same to the average person sitting in the grandstands. Only the real gear-heads know the difference.

They allow billet blocks with four main caps and yet they have blown them on the dyno I know for sure.

Yes. Used the slotted plates for low and the solid center for high. We bent the metal on the tie bars that dip in the oil so as to sling oil into the plates.. must have helped. Keep in mind, we had nowhere near the hp tractors are making today . Once Eddie was driving at Union City Tn when the manifold turned red, the exhaust we had enlarged to take a bigger turbo let the bolts pop and the turbo blew the hood off and the sled ran over it all. The hood was as flat as a pancake, and well meaning people were handing him hot parts as they pulled him off the track.. He was covered with black oil.
