i put a new alt. and the volt light still comes on even at high idle, old alt checked out bad. is there a connection or a relay some where i need to check? new batteries and good cables. i bought this tractor with a bad engine and someone else took it apart and i rebuilt the motor, so i have no history about it. thanks randy

Where did you get the replacement alt? My experience in the past with places like O'Reilly and Auto Zone is you will go through 3 or 4 before you find a good one. I would have the replacement tested. Make sure that the main post on the back of it has battery voltage. If it is a Delco 10SI, there should be battery voltage at both terminals on the connector with the ign sw on.

Verify whether the alt is charging (or not) by placing an ammeter in-between the hot connection at the alt and the feed wire. It may be charging and your dashboard could be the problem by not turning off the light.

Put a volt meter across the batteries. Should see 13.5 to 14V if it's working. I agree with the Doc.

finally fixed the alt, after 3 different regulators, this one is a self exciteing that starts at a lower speed and i believe it works off the stator. anyway a delco needs a special reg to work with this tractor. thanks for all the help, also sent old neihoff to be checked out, but new delco was still cheaper than a reg alone from neihoff.
