    Posted: 03 Jan 2019 at 9:50pm
I recently purchased an Allis WF.   The front sheet metal is styled but the rear fenders are the unstyled type. The tractor has electric start.   Seriel number is 2232.   From what I read in an Allis book, one is pictured in this variation but none where produced for sale.
I purchased this tractor from it's second owner.   He stated that this tractor was bought brand new in the Door county Wisconsin area.   The tractor was used in a cherry and apple orchard for the first part of it's life.

Also, second question.   Is it possible to take the radiator, sheet metal, and misc from a doner unstyled WC to make this look like an unstyled wf? Has anyone attempted a conversion like this? Thanks

Interesting, There is a picture of one in Norm's book taken at the factory, Who told you one like it wasn't sold?  I would leave it the way it is and restore, will be a real conversation piece at shows.

Obviously at least one was sold!

May have been an attempt at an ‘Orchard’ WF.

im no wf expert and checking the serial number to dertermine the year would shed a little light, but i think it is completely within the realm of possibility that the original customer had the dealer install unstyled fenders on a styled tractor to keep low hanging branches out of the tire like other orchard tractors.

I agree with Mark. Yes the hood tank and radiator will change but I believe I'd leave it as is. You have the most valuable pieces, rear fenders. Now you need to get a unstyled and a styled to show with it.

Interesting thing is I have a 1939 salesmans binder and the literature is styled for a WC and unstyled for a WF. I guess it took them a little longer to get the fenders design complete. I do think it is possible your WF was sent that way from the factory considering the year of mfg.

It's obviously an early WF, since it has the slanted exhaust manifold.
It all looks like a styled except the rear fenders and the angle iron frame under the seat and the seat base (suspension). I have never seen a seat base like that on a WF unless it was an option?

Cool looking ,but as we all know a lot of years passed and any one could have changed anything with parts they had. Any type of story from owner before .

Is there a hole in the hood for an exhaust pipe?

Can we see pictures of the right side of it and more of the seat? There was a curved iron that filled in between the fender and frame on the unstyled. Who knows, maybe it is a 1 of 1.

The curved filler pcs are not in the picture but they would not be there because the side panels under the unstyled tank are not there either. Who knows, farmer Joe may have been in a hurry to get one and did get it in the transition. What was on the front? Blade?

The steering gear is the early Lavine which was used on WF's up to #1903, the last of the unstyled models.  Styled models, #1904 and on, used a Ross gear which had a different steering wheel with a smaller hub.

This tractor did have a snow blade attached on the front.   When looking at the rear fenders, everything looks like it was done right, there is no farmer welding or modifications.   The second owner had it for approximately 35 years.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but wasn’t the side exhaust used on distillate tractors; even styled versions?

Well I don't care what you say, that battery box doesn't look factory. Is there a hole in the hood for the exhaust pipe? I don't think I have ever seen a styled hood without one.

I posted an odd allis on here once and got the same response as you have. If its not in the "bible" it didn't happen. I don't see it that way. From looking at the pictures I would say that was done at the factory. I don't feel it is up to the owner to prove that it was, it's up to the skeptics to prove it wasn't. Could have came out of Canada, Allis was known to ship things that did not sell well in the U,S, up there.

The seat is aftermarket. It was made by Knoedler. Looks like it has styled brake covers on it.

allisrutledge, I am not a WF expert even though they were once very common in this area. Next door neighbor had 3 WF's . I'm guessing that the dealer likely changed the fenders and possibly the exhaust manifold before it was delivered new at the customers request. Norm Swinford told me personally that it was very common in California for dealers to modify an new tractor to the customers needs.

Example of dealer changes.
I don't think that any WD's came with Snap Couplers. My dad bought one of the last WDs, he was the first owner, the dealer had used it as a demonstrator. It had the Snap Coupler on it when we got it.

I know we are getting off subject, but we rarely see a WD without snap coupler in our area. I think a lot depended on how the dealer ordered them.

I never knew it was possible to buy a 180 or 190 without a hydraulic PTO until I started in this forum. Our local dealers ordered all of them (that I know of) with hydraulic PTO.

WF's were quite uncommon in our area. My grandfather bought his new in 49. We have a lot of relatives in Canada and he had seen a new WF when visiting. It was narrower and shorter than a WC, which he liked because it would fit in the barn, so they could shovel manure directly into the manure spreader, so he requested one from the local dealer. To order a WF, the dealer had to order 2. They were the only 2 WF's in northern NY that I ever saw.

He didn't get a PTO because his Ford 9N had one and it had a side mounted mower, which was the only PTO thing he had.

I bought a WF from a guy around Courtland NY back in the early 1980's.

On the snap coupler subject. No WD's left the factory with snap coupler and it wasn't until approx 4800 WD-45''s had been built that SC became standard equipment. Most WD's including my Dad's was retrofitted with a SC.

In looking at pictures the plate around the clutch pedal is from the later styled wfs and the fender brackets are from later styled wfs and serial no is a later styled wf my guess is they wanted the unstyled fenders for some reason and swapped them in still a nice find
