Winter projects

Decided to rebuild all my headlights on my tractors. Now that the reflectors, gasket, and other parts are available, it makes a nice light when finished.

Lon , how about a couple pictures and parts list of what you used for the pre 1960s ?

Well, the 190 XT is finished up. I received my rebuilt hydraulic pump back from Sandy lake. Bill did an awesome job as I finally have 1 finger steering at all engine speeds. It’s been needed since I bought it 1 1/2 years ago. Merry Christmas to me|
Still have to put dads 6060 clutch in fresh back from Rick.
Then the 390 AC haybine with Tiger teeth install. Go over the bailer to get ready for hay season.. the Oliver planter needs some TLC. Life as a farmer full time or part time never ends. And I love it|

Drained 2.5 gallons of antifreeze out of the oil pan of my new project 7040 Powershift, threw two batteries on her, cranked, got pickup on it to jump start, crank more, not much smoke, investigate dangling wires, hook lift pump back up (has the updated dual spin-on filter lift pump kit) crank and she fires up!

Drove it off the truck! Powershift seems crisp! :)

Now I need to find out where this antifreeze leak is coming from... :)

I am also figuring out why my 2-155 White project will not shift into two gears. I am afraid its a rusted shift collar internally, but I may get lucky and find its just in the linkage. I feel bad about that one, turns out the jockey that sold it powerwashed it and didnt realize it had a cracked manifold, and got water down the engine. Had I known this I would have tried to make it run the day I bought it, but no, harvest was coming and the auction yard I bought it at is very easy to deal with, so it sat till early december. She definitely had some rust in the bores... took starter and muffler off, poured oil down exhaust, barred it over back and forth till I could roll it over, rolled it over 10 times, re-installed starter, and cranked a few times, and she fired up. hopefully the rings are OK...


Tuesday I am going after my 6000 series 8 row White planter. Its set on 36 inch rows, and I have not convinced myself that here in dry western KS I need to be on 30s, so who knows, it may stay as-is, or it get scooted in to 8R30.

You know you are a junk hoarder when you buy the parts before you buy the tractor, I had the front weights I needed for the White 2-155, top link and quick hitch I needed for the 7040, and many bearings and other things I needed for the 6108 White Planter all bought at auction in years past.

we wont even go into the pickup truck projects I have lined up as well... :/

If I get 1 tractor and 1 pickup going and plant 36 inch row corn next year I will be ahead of schedule..... ;)

it's amazing to see how much debris a pack rat can accumulate on 5 acres over 20 years.

Right now I have an 8010 in the shop that we got last spring. It’s got a new floor mat, cab kit, door seals, radio and speakers, and waiting on a head liner. It had a stiff range shifter and a new cable fixed that. Also ran the GPS receiver cable up the left cab post and out behind the lights so that it’s not exposed to tree limbs and blowing in the wind.

It had a dash throttle so I bought a console throttle from a salvage yard and I discovered some brackets in the cab where the cable and lower bell crank mount we’re missing so I fabbed them up and welded them on.
I have some pics I’ll post later.

I also noticed that our 85 8070 has the seat mounted 3” lower than the 8050 and this 8010 which works a lot better with an air ride seat. so I had 3/16 metal bent like the 8070. I got it and a grammar air ride seat installed yesterday.

It’s been a lot of work but it should be nice planting this spring.

8050 radiator was leaking this summer mowing hay so it’s coming in next. It will probably get recored. It is getting a new radio and head liner while I have it in the shop. Still had the original radio and it doesn’t Work very well any more. It has an air ride seat now but it’s getting lowered like the 8010.

There’s a few other od jobs but that should keep me busy for a while.

Install new bushings in the front axle of the B.  Clean and reseal the fuel tank on the WC.

I have to hand it to you Victory, having your jobs on the spread sheet is a good management tool. I wish I had the gumption, or whatever it takes to do that. Seems like when I go to run a seasonal piece of equipment, that's when I remember what I was supposed to fix on it during the off season. Darrel

I keep a piece of paper with a list that I can add to as I remember even if it is another repair on the same piece and when I get one done I cross it off so it feels like I accomplished something but then I add two more.

I HAVE to get carb kits for the WD45, one for a D-17 and the CA.
So it'll be boiling them (Dick L's recipe), cleaning, clearing and then new parts.
Other than that, I can't get much done,,,,,,I don't have a heated shop/garage as yet.

Not A-C related, But I gots a new set of skins ordered fer the newest K'boter, gotta pickup the Dixie chopper from the shop, later this week, and gots a payin garden tillin job, tomorrow...

Put as much sand on the groung as mother nature will let me as I'm a dredge operator 6 days a week, and I help at the farm the other 7.  My neighbor from 40 years ago has a early 190 gasser, with a junk cab. ( I remember the tractor as a teenager) He want's me to add a second remote and install a loader. The cab isn't going back on.  Dad has completely rebuilt 4 rows on the 630 corn head for the L3, the snap roller bearings went out on the other 2 rows this past fall. Lots of little stuff, 4 rears on the 8070, it all takes time. Like everybody else, seems like there is always something I should be doing. My son has his FFA mechanics project too.

Winter projects....

- weld up seat frame holes that are wallered out, all the pins have worn through the bushings and cut into the frame, and install new bushings
-new seal on PTO, and lower seal on power steering shaft
-replace all gauges and switches
-rewire tractor (new harness is here but need to get into it)
-replace valve cover gasket
-drive out brake cross shaft, lube up and reinstall, check brake settings
-remove heat shield on side of transmission, straighten and clean
-replace right fender and straighten brace
-remount hydraulic quick connects so they will work
-change seat
-new tires and rear rims
-various cosmetic improvements
-sand blast and paint
etc.

-valve cover replacement
-find engine oil leak and fix
-new blades on mower
And if there is any thing left by spring, I can work on it next winter....
