Friend of mine wants me to paint his 185. Pretty straight old tractor, only has 4700 hrs on a working tack. One question, is the mesh grill supposed to be cream? The air pre-cleaner and pipe seem to be to tall. The pipe has cracked the hood and has lots of play back and forth even with the plate underneath. Is this normal? I did shorten the pipe 3" and extended the support plate under the hood. I'll post a finished pic. I tried to buy it but he said his wife wont let him sell this one cause it's hers,,,,now that's a wife!!!

Not trying to pick a fight with Gary, but I do love shiny new paint. Better to paint a nice tractor than a POJ. But then that is just my opinion as well. Darrel

I believe most of those grills were cream. If it were mine I'd paint the wheels and put a new hood decal on it. The rest looks too good.

Leon the grill is suppose to be orange like it is. I have Dads here that he bought new. I remember when he cut the air breather down a little. It was that height from the factory. I am with Darrel. I like the shiny paint. It looks good for original, but it will look better then new when you get done, Black stripe 100 series have orange grills. White stripe 100 series have cream grill. The 200 is the exception, because it has the pleeted grill.

Every one I've ever seen was orange. I'm pretty sure none were ever cream from the factory. The hood breaking out around the air cleaner pipe is very common. There's just too much weight hanging up there and not much holding it. Edited by m16ty - 27 Dec 2011 at 8:50pm |

We'll, if "SHE" want's it painted, it's gonna get paint ! I am not sure that is original paint anyways, there is a definate difference in the shade of orange comparing the grill surround to the hood and side panel.

I tried to get him to do the wheels and decals but it's to late, it's gonna get painted, I already sanded the old decals off and ruffed up the sheet metal. I took the rear tires and rims off tonight (full of fluid) what a pain. Straightend out the front weight bracket. He must have hit something pretty hard on the right front axle, both channels of the wishbone are bowed to the left about an inch. But those are the only real issues I have found.

I know for a fact that the grill on a 1968 180 is painted cream.

I'll mention the front end to him and see what he says. That muffler still has the burnt tag on it, it must be fairly new, we'll just have to go with it. It is a 1975 so after looking in Norms book, I see where early grills were cream. Also in Norms book I see most of the pics of the One-Seventy through 185 have the air intake under the hood, but it doesn't mention the differences in the text.

I would suggest the bigger stock muffler as the smaller one will worp valves as they will have to much back pressure under heavy use.

Yes, the grille should be orange. The precleaner looks to be the right height as it is. If the precleaner gets snagged on a tree branch or something, that will cause the hood to buckle. My 175 has been like that for years. It's been keeping my bodywork guy real busy latley!

Leon, the air cleaner pipe, hose and precleaner were optional. My 185 has it and wish it didn't have as they are a pain, as they are not a stable piece of hardware and block your vision. My dad's 185 didn't have and looks cleaner without it. I don't recall seeing a new 185 with cream grill from the factory, 180 maybe but not the 185. Dads was a 1973, my 185 is a 1978, neither had a cream grill from the factory.

Thanks for all the replies, I don't think we have to worry about the muffler hurting the valves, about the only thing this tractor will do is run his log splitter and a little blade work.
