The catch is it has to have the serial # on the back where the BE # is located. Anybody have one that they would sell?

I didn't know there was such a thing. Did they stamp them both places after the CE block came out?I'll have to look at my "spare" block.

So it has to be a mid 40's block...
I too want to hear an explanation. I never knew such a thing existed... Why so particular? Doing a restoration down to every detail?

Can't say that in all the tractors I've salvaged out, I've ever noticed a CE serial number in the BE location. Maybe I just didn't look for it.

Just disassembled a CE block this week and had the sn on the back like the early WC's. It didn't have the generator bosses.

I have a block without the gen boss. I'll have to look. Strange as it is it came on a CA. Obviously a motor swap sometime back.

It is for a restoration of my Model C serial #30. The block that is in it is a CE with the serial # on the back but it also has generator bosses. We tried to repair the original block but the machine shop says it's too far gone. Maybe I'm being too anal about the restoration but the serial # in the back adds to the uniqueness of the tractor, since model C's are not highly collectable I'm not sure it's worth restoring unless it's as close to original as possible. Does anyone know if BE blocks were made with generator bosses?

just checked lonnie, there both ce blocks w/ the ser# on the flange I also have a C ser# 1613 & the engine ser# is on the flange , Ser# CE1603G . that seems strange a lower ser# engine than the tractor. Could it be that they built the engines & randomlly put them in the tractors or it's been replaced with an engine thats that close. It has generator on it.

John, what's the engine serial # on yout '41 C and where is it located?
Bruce, that is odd to have the engine # lower than the tractor. I wonder at what point of manufacture they put the #'s on them. Maybe the tractor # is the last thing out the door and it got pulled out of line for some reason after the engine was installed so it lost it's spot in the order?

The BE block started in the mid 40's with the generator mounts. All CE blocks had generator mounts. It would have to be a very early CE block to have the serial # where the BE # was. I never heard of that before.
What is wrong with the block that you have? Is it cracked? Bob

My block is CE 35 G and it's stamped on the back. I was thinking 1942 was the last year for the BE block. My block was cracked between all the cylinders which is common enough but it had a vertical crack in the water jacket that allowed the top of the block to shift in height so the only way to save it (according to the machinist) would be to machine the whole top side down flush and then cut new grooves for the sleeves to set into but that would cause other problems with the sleeves setting too low in the block (compression and clearance issues). I might get another opinion from another machinist but like I said earlier it is just a model C so I can't go crazy throwing money at it and machine shops know how to charge for stuff like that.

Get you a CE block and mill the back pad so you can stamp what numbers you want on it. Take a grinder to the flange to remove previous numbers and work it over with a scaling needle. As long as you don't tell, nobody will know.LOL

That is probably what I will end up doing. In the end it's still another tractor saved.
