Went ahead and changed oil in the wife’s car today. Got the WIX filter, all ready to go, put a little oil on the gasket, some on the threads, spin it on, as I was tightening it down(by hand of course), I noticed the a sticker on the side, and it said ‘Made In Mexico’, holy crap wtf is this all about, a WIX filter non-the-less. O well, cross WIX filters off my list.
I tried to follow the science, but it was not there. I then followed the money, and that’s where I found the science.

Ever since the fiasco WIX tried to pull off years ago selling redesigned ElCheapo filters for the bypass systems of our Allis Chalmers engines, I have refused to by any WIX or NAPA filters for anything.
I prefer to get Fleetguard filters, Baldwin filters are also acceptable.
If it was fun to pull in LOW gear, I could have a John Deere.

Exactly. I’ve seen Wix and Napa filters with China printed on them.

Wix was bought out by Mann + Hummel a while ago, and i've noticed a big shift overseas since then, although i assume it started long before the merger. For the tractors/combine i primarily run Agco filters since they are usually a good bit cheaper than parts stores. Seems like they are all made in the U.S., i'm curious who is making them for Agco. Seems like at one point i got a hydraulic filter that was a regular Baldwin in an Agco box.

I really need to start looking into Baldwin filters. Over the winter i was at a heavy duty parts store getting some stuff for our grain truck, and grabbed a set of Baldwin filters for the DT466. I don't think i paid over $60 total for 2 oil and 2 fuel filters. All made in the U.S.

Napa uses different suppliers now depending on what part of the country you’re in. Our region uses hfi for auto and Baldwin for hd oil and fuel. Donaldson for air

Most Carquest brand filters are made by Baldwin.

The only parts stores in the little town I live is O’Reilly’s. The previous time I changed oil on this car, O’Reilly’s had Honda OEM filters, and those were stamped right on the filter ‘Made in USA’.

Napa here sells both economy and premium filters. Both labelled as Napa, both made by WIX. The premium ones are made in North America (most often in Mexico, but the larger cannisters are typically USA), the economy ones are made in China. They usually have good stock of all the economy ones, but premium ones often have to be ordered in.

Other folks will rightly criticize me, but these days I put on whatever filter I can buy quickly and locally. Which for me is usually Napa economy ones, but sometimes Fram. I suspect they all have similar micron ratings, and I've never known any oil filter to fail (not in the last couple decades, anyway). Doesn't seem to bother my equipment. My Nissan Titan just rolled past 420,000 km a couple weeks ago, having used nothing but the Napa economy filters. And still runs like a top and pulls my 16' float around regularly. My old daily-driver Toyota Matrix beater had over 600k on it when I scrapped it. Engine still ran like a top, and it also saw nothing but economy filters (I'd still be driving it if I hadn't smashed the front end up on a deer).

In my opinion, regular filter/oil changes and using synthetic oil are more important to me than where the filter was made or if it's a supposed 'premium' brand. A couple decades ago I would have been concerned with where the filters were made, but not so much anymore. Not that I disagree with wanting a high-quality filter. I just doubt that any manufacturer has any wonderful secret or revolutionary QA methods that would make them so much better than others.

DanielW : Do you remember years ago when WIX remade the packed cotton type filters our Allis Chalmers engines with the Bypass filtration system requires with a pleated paper design? You must not. These filters caused very low oil pressure and ruined many engines. As the saying goes "Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me." And to that I have to add if I allow myself to be fool the second time, I'M an idiot.

Shoup has a very good selection of Baldwin for older models. I buy 90% of all my filters through there catalog. From the 8070 back to the UC. If I place an order before noon, it's here the next day.

very seldom ( if ever) does an engine fail because of bad filters.. Normally they just wear out or something breaks...Any more a LOT of the filters are made in Mexico and China...that being said, i use only MOTOCRAFT filters in my FORD Truck engines...they have an antidrain back valve in them.. Had trouble 15 years ago with motor TICK on startup due to low oil pressure..
Like them all, but love the "B"s.
