finally working on 1930 u

i finally had time to start tearing apart my model u continental motor. took of water pump and go out governor. broke a couple things. the thing i was worried about the most was getting crank out. i took out soft plug in the back and used a brass bar to pound out crank. but there was not enough room to get crank past the lifters and they are frozen. i was going to give up for the day but noticed since i took the bolts out that held the windage tray that the casting that held the lifters had moved. low and behold the whole things casting and lifters come out. so then i was able to get the cam out. now the only thing is to get the valves and guides out. but they are the worse rotted thing in the hole motor. do you guys have any ideas some of the valve heads are rotted off along with the guides. need to find guides and valves and seats that can be made to fit in there. im going to get crank polished and use old pistons and new rings and just hone the cylinders. i do need one piston though. im also going to have to learn how to babbit the rod bearings. will be awesome when i get done. but as you can see its a mess

this tractor has not ran since 1959 when  neighbor borrowed the carb off it. also the first time its been in a barn and thats been over a year now

Looks like you've got a lot of work ahead of you but when it's done you will be a proud man with a great machine.

Yeah, looks like a big project, but that is what makes it lots of fun!  I like these kind of projects, I'm a sucker for basket cases!  Keep us posted please, I need to learn about U's yet, as I don't know very much about them.

That is an interesting manifold. Quite different that any of mine.

I have had a lot of people ask about the manifold setup it is wild like some kind of after market one no onehas seen one before.

Manifold barely says robin I thought rorin'. Cool learned somthing new.I'm also looking for steel front wheels and a piston

I just got done rebuilding my water pump which was seized up. I have also rebuilt governor and oil pump.all turn nice and smooth. I will get pics of oil pump and governor. They where rusted solid now nice and smooth inside are nice and clean but out side I left to look like it has never been touched. Crank is going to be done next week. I need one piston and steel front wheels. Also anyone here do a good job babbitting bearings or can tell me easy was to do.

I have seen people try it and the babbitt come apart from not being cleaned properly.
