Went to start my d-14 been sitting bout a month and a half. Barely started then ran poorly, let run for 20 min. thinking it might clear up -no luck. Thinking it was a gas problem I drained tank and cleaned carb, no luck . Since the coil looked old as me [63], I took a newer coil off a running ca. I've got juice to ign. side of coil but nowhere else, points were replaced last summer. What do I check next Thanks in advance, Yes I am a parts changer guilty as charged!!!!

I'd try a new condenser next.I just went thru a similar thing with my Oliver 66 tried about everything I could think of after digging into it turned out to be the intake part of the manifold had warped and wouldn't set exactly flush against the head.Good used manifold off ebay back in action.

Points can/will oxidize while setting. Try folding a dollar bill up and rubbing between the contacts to clean them.

You can use copy paper the clean the points. Did you take off the sediment bowl and clean it? Did you take the breather hose off of the carb and give it a shot of ether and try it? Check the air cleaner for a mouse house.

Replace the points with Napa points and condenser ,or Blue streak . Any others are junk .Then start checking for other problems .

yes, but ONLY when the points are open... you have to rotate the engine a bit to turn the dist shaft to get the point an a 'lobe',which 'opens' the points. with tractor in neutral, you give a quick 'start' with the key. more often than not, the points magically go to 'close' not to 'open',but eventually you'll get them 'open'. otherway is to use a big, flat screwdriver in the bellhousing hole to turn the engine.

Thanks Jay, after removing the points I think something was touching where it wasn't supposed to. I checked it with a test light, made a little bend in it ,rechecked it with light & started right up!! Everyone says Blue Streak ign. but every Napa I go to has only Echilin on the box & looks cheap!!!!

BWD, Niehoff and Echlin are all Standard Motor Products companies. SMP is the parent company of Standard/Blue Streak. You just need to check the grade. I don't know about the others but Standard, at least, is marketing many products in a "trade version" to be price competitive. Here is how they say it: "Standard T-Series is a competitively priced line containing some of the most popular part numbers to help you meet your market needs. The Standard T-Series is a fit whenever a commercially acceptable product is called for." Most of these parts use the same part number as the premium ones with a "T" added as a suffix at the end. I stay with the premium Standard Blue Streak or Echlin.

You can't tell by looks if a condenser is junk you have to test them .
