I've seen pictures of a few CAs with the drag link to the outside like the one shown below from Charlie175's pics of the Woodstock show Charlie175, if you'd rather I not link to your pic let me know and I'll take it out) I'm thinking this was done to make clearance for the alternator maybe. What would have to be done to do this or is this considered an abomination?

Generally done to provide more clearance (alternator, add-on pump, etc). The arms that the drag link attaches to are tapered bores; one has to ream out a taper from the outside to install the drag link there.

The "SI" series Alts can be used as shown, but the SI's cousin, the "CS" series is even more pint size, and will fit even better. The CS needs to be hooked up a little differently, compared to its cousin the SI, but the fit works great! Mounting would basically be the same....

Is the mounting different or wiring or both? I'm kind of averse to swapping the drag link to the outside but I'm gonna put an alternator on this thing.

I got a CS alternator setup (wiring harness, mounting bracket, and instructions) from Steve for one of my CA rehabs and it fit just fine W/O reversing the drag link. After having a few electrical shorts from faulty ammeters, I now replace the ammeter with a voltmeter.
