I rebuilt the gearbox, (seals, bearings) on my Dixie cutter, it was NOT fun. Bearings came off the shaft with a cutting torch. Had to put the shaft in the freezer and heat the bearings in the oven to get it back together.

Sounds like a good idea Sugarmaker
The gearbox is nice and snug so don’t think it needs bearings just seals (it leaked all the oil out). |

I have the snap coupler version of that mower. You can get the seals from Agco still, that's where mine came from. The bolt on the blade adapter is a left hand thread BTW...

Got to looking at the gearbox , it is different than the one on AGCO’s website. Also learned that Allis has two different places make them. https://na.apb.agcocorp.com/p/agcoallis/9001526b/l/31?tocGuid=20536ac1-47fa-3055-d958-3c34fd356ef5

Yes you're right, as near as I can tell the 160's were made by Danuser machine works, like yours is, and the Allis Laporte plant.Laporte built units have the two ribs that run front to back on the deck. The Danuser built units had the two angle iron pieces that ran side to side like yours.

It doesn't look like it.Here is a link to an ebay search for the manual for your mower.Looks like one can be had for $12.00 bucks. It has the parts list in it.Maybe get the manual and then cross the seal numbers to get what you need.Hope this helps. http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p2334524.m570.l1313&_nkw=allis+chalmers+160+rotary+mower&_sacat=0&LH_TitleDesc=0&_osacat=0&_odkw=160+rotary+mower

I got the gearbox back together and put on. The bottom side bearing was cracked so I figured out AGCO can’t get no info on them so I took the gearbox apart and took it in to my local black smith and he found a replacement bearing that fit nicely then had to replace a tire and jacked it up and the wheel bearing was rusty so than had to get those wheel bearings, so far I’m waiting on a sleeve for the wheel bearing seal.
Thought I would post a update to show the slow process on it. It should be like a new one now!!! |

Had to put new knuckles on the mower. Got them from a local John Deere dealer so now it has Deere parts on it.

Ok now I’m back.
I mowed a 15 acre patch of CRP ground with that little 5foot mower and my wd45 and well it started blowing antifreeze out of the overflow hose so I quit for lunch and came back after it cooled down, so I started it with the radiator cap off and everything seemed fine but as so as it hit 150 degrees it blew antifreeze all over again. So after thinking the thermostat could be sticking I taped on it and it quite doing it. So going to torque the head down again after I bring it back and see if that helps. If anyone has any other ideas of what could be going on please post. |

If it's over full it will puke out the excess when warmed up. As long as you can still see it above the tubes you got enough.

Ok I checked the head bolt but they was all good, it now just over heats but the radiator is cold.
I am thinking the water pump is air locked. So I left the radiator cap real loose for this night. Tomorrow I will see if it made any difference. Also painted the pipe on it. |

Now I think it might have a bad head gasket. It is foamy in the radiator. Does anyone know where to get a Copper head gasket?

Got the head off of it and the head gasket looks fine but the head has a bunch of cracks around the intake valve.
If you look closely at the picture you can see the cracks. Edited by 55allis - 03 Dec 2020 at 9:17pm |

Why do you want a copper head gasket? If the sleeves are low, a copper gasket won't help. MACK

Ok now with a update.
Found a guy who makes copper head gaskets so I’m having him make me one. Now the problem is finding head bolts that are not too expensive, I call my Agco dealer and they said it was $1600 for a kit so a little too much $$$$ for me. |

Someone here has a list ( I think) of ARP bolts you need. Much less than AGCO.

in my experience with these hydraulic systems on any of my WD's when you over fill them they air lock and quit working so adding another tanks will definitely cause this to happen and dads had it happen on his 45 as well
