Zenith is the better carb by far. The rear ends are the same for each the 190 and 190XT. Early tractors had a lighter rear end but almost all the early XT diesels  were changed over. In fact I saw my first 190XT diesel with the light rear end at the last Suess Sale in Racine MN. Some slipped through the cracks and this one is still going. I have an early straight 190 with a D2800 and it's been a great tractor for me. Have had it since 1998.

Lonn, I have a small axel rear end XT, there were some XT's that could not accept the big axel so A-C made harden axels and put them in to replace the origional axel. So it is possible that it was changed and then maybe it wasn't.  When we bought our XT, the dealer told us how to tell the difference between the hard and soft axel but 35 years since have gone by and I don't remember what to look for to tell if it was changed or not.

I don't think you'll ever hurt the rear with a gas motor....
