Folks,
Was having trouble finding this thread using the search function. Sorted on views and found it. I just received a package from the Brown truck. It was a very nice used gas tank for the D17, from Rick C. Awesome looking tank, and will make a nice replacement for the current one which I did get to stop leaking, but! If I it does start leaking again or if I decide to repaint the tractor this will be a nice replacement. No dings or dents and very clean! I do have the D17 in the garage nice and dry! I had it tarped outside for several weeks during syrup season. It fired right up last night and I took it for a ride down the road and back. Doesn't seem like its been a year already since I bought it. Looking forward to hauling some wood and a few tractor pulls with it this summer too. Thanks to all the AC folks that have helped on this project. Tip of the hat to Rick Corder today. Hope he is doing well. Regards, Chris Edited by Sugarmaker - 30 Mar 2017 at 1:56pm |

Chris great to hear you got her back out and running. It is a great thread here with all the photos. I am sure you can't wait to get back out plowing with your d17 again. It is just starting to warm up here and now we have 18 inches of snow on the way tomorrow. Weird weather.

Guys,
Thanks! Spring is always such a grand time. Here is the new to me D17 gas tank: I will use the gauge from my old tank. Only minor rust on the bottom under the cloth band area. Good cleaning and primer should stop this issue. Area around the bracket looks real good. Hope things are good in Orange Land! Regards, Chris Edited by Sugarmaker - 31 Mar 2017 at 8:01am |

Rod by P D is brake release. You can see it goes to brake lock. If it had been shedded it would look almost new. Great find.

Ted,
Well it is kind of a spare here too, since my tank is currently functioning! But it is in good shape (better than mine), and I don't think you can buy new ones? If I never put it on it will be a good piece for the auction! Ted, There is another tank on here for sale! Regards, Chris Edited by Sugarmaker - 31 Mar 2017 at 5:10pm |

Chris you are right you can't buy a new tank. You are safe to assume the same for any old tractors where they are part of the outside body line. That is why a good tank is a great score...

That looks like a nice tank on the outside.
Not sure how bad your old one is, but my d15 tank split in half pretty easily. If you turn them upside down and cut inside the rolled seam, they're not too bad to weld back together. You can clean them out, hammer dents out... Now that you have 2 you can practice on the rough one.
As far as searching the forum. I find using google searches for any forum is the way to go. You have to type in: site:allischalmers.com D17 sugarmaker or any search terms. Just make sure to put in site:allischalmers.com |

Is so easy to fix scaly interior rust and tiny pin holes in a gas tank isn't funny or real expensive.
I bought my 1938 Massey 101 in 1998 and it had a lot of pin holes in the bottom knew I didn't have a snow balls chance in the heat of finding a new one so started looking for options and the first place I went looking is a antique car/truck show. Those guys turned me on to a product from Gemplers called gas tank sealer. Got some lacquer thinner and a hand full of drive way stones. Sealed all the openings with duct tape and rolled those stones around for a bit let it soak for a day and did it again. Then drained the tank and allowed it to air dry. Added this stuff per directions, Next July that sealed tank will be 20 years and still holds all the gasoline I pour into it. Remainder in the can I put the lid back on turned up side down and put in a cabinet in the garage. Got it out two years ago and fixed the seam leak on my ford 5000. Folks,
Its been a while on this topic. I have had a lot of fun with the D17 since I bought it. Plowing and tractor pulling. Today the daughter said she was going to do a lot more brush hogging on her property. She has the little Jubilee now with the 5 foot Ford 951 brushhog on it. The Ford looks like crap from setting outside this year. I need to get it home and give it some attention/ clean up. So the D17 would be a good tractor for her to do some brush hogging compared to the little Ford. I needed to make or buy a top link for adding a 3 point to the 17. Here goes: Took off the seat and laid out some steel scraps: More fitting and the top link brackets in place: Burned these holes and checked size with drill: My version of the top link for a D17: Added a WD45 drawbar and the portions of the 3 point from the WD45 project: Looks like this should work OK. Will get it over to her place and hook up the brushhog. A little more horsepower and the power steering should be real handy knocking down some heavy weeds/ brush and goldenrod. Hope she doesn't cut all the goldenrod. The bees are working it hard right now. Regards, Chris Edited by Sugarmaker - 19 Aug 2019 at 9:36pm |

Looks great Chris!
If I may make a suggestion and this may be for naught, I think that I would "shim with washers" the bolts going through the upper and lower lift arm and yokes to keep the bolts from bending unexpectedly.

Jim, Folks,
There is a lot of free play in all the joints! Thanks for the suggestion on the spacers. It would tighten things up a bit for sure. I am going to put lock nuts on all the bolts too. Just got back from my daily 3 mile bike ride and coast! Beautiful day! FYI Cheryl say no more tractors! Found a nice WD in Ohio! Regards, Chris

Looks great Chris!
I have an issue with your posts though... You make it all seem so easy and straightforward, that I can't believe I haven't done "this or that" yet. Then I go look for the supplies in my garage and realize I don't have nearly half of the cool extra supplies that you have gathered LOL In all seriousness I love reading your posts and watching what you have going on. Carry on good sir and thank you for sharing |

Strokendiesel002,
Thanks! I have a bad or good tendency to not throw stuff away. Or if I do throw it away I drag it back out and try to make something out of nothing. A torch, welder, and 10 lb hammer and you can fix about anything! I took Jim's advice and bought a stack of 5/8 washers and shimmed the joints and also added lock nuts to all the bolts too! D17 is loaded. Will get to try it out this afternoon with the brush hog. Some of this stuff is as high as the tractor. Not sure how much I am going to wallow down? Regards, Chris |

Folks,
Walnut grove and D17 resting after 2 hours of mowing down 6 foot high ragweed and goldenrod! It was a hot day too! Her pigs loved the tractor and mowing near their pen. They ran around like crazy! In summary The 3 point is going to work OK. The attachment for the top link could have been up and on top of the weldment. Regards, Chris |

Folks,
Couple updates! The three little piggies are now bacon! We used the D17 and the carry all to help move some tree stands around today as we get ready for The first day of rifle season for deer. I also picked up a shorter top link from Tractor supply and it worked better with the upper bracket on the D17 top attachment. I was happy that the 17 started right up having set for several weeks! Back to your spare tank, may want to fill to verify no holes as even the top half can have them that are not easy to see.
I say this as as found pin holes on tanks that were "good" but stored for years, only to find them when put into service and surface rust cleaned out via muriatic acid. At minimum, a quart of ATF or MM Oil used to coat inside until used would go a long way towards preventing rust while setting. Enjoy your posts about keeping these old gals alive.

Thanks for the good tip on storing empty gas tanks! I had not thought of that. Some light oil in there would be a good idea. I enjoy sharing tidbits of orange with fellow Allis folks. Regards, Chris |

I got a black bar '59 WFE. Years ago I bought into the WFE is better stuff..but now, with most of my tractor work involving weaving in and out of trees, I would prefer a NF. I dont have hilly land either. I want to someday get another NF D17 so I can retire my "chore tractor" Super C my gramps bought. What did you want for that D17 anyway??

Tom,
Good luck with your hunt for the NFE D17! I like mine. But I like wide fronts also. Guess the narrows fit more into the antique pulling scene, which I partake in several times per year. I enjoy working with this D17. It handles jobs well, the controls are comfortable, and seating and steering is good. I have learned to move the seat back when ever I get off. Makes getting the old right leg over the tranny easier. Regards, Chris

Thanks. Im in no hurry; I have a priority list and the NF isnt at the top yet. My top of the list is to get the D17 operational again, (tank rework) a loader on the D17, then a 3ph, then a fruit tree sprayer on it.

Tom,
You must have a big orchard? What is your tank issue? I had to do repairs on this one and several WD series tractors also. Most were leaking around the bracket tack welded on the bottom. I would recommend brazing around the bracket when the tank is gas fume free!m I had to solder this D17 tank because someone prior had tried to solder it already. Took me two trys! I really like having the three point on the old D17 VS the snap coupler. I dropped the carry-all and hooked up the snow blade in short order! This will be a back up tractor in case my daughter or I need it when winter sets in. Regards, Chris

Big enough that I'm not doing it by hand! When done planting looking at 200 trees or so. The one I want is 3ph. https://agrimist.com/agrimist-d-6-150-grand-island/ On the tank, when I got the tractor 15 yrs ago I had the rusty tank cut open, blasted and coated. Didnt last. The fella who just redid mine said the coating product used probably couldnt handle the ethanol. I then took it to a body shop to get purdied up. Waiting on it. Spent 4 hr with buddy trying to extract the sheared bolt that holds the front and back strap on. Holy cow! Ended up having to drill it out... Nothing is ever easy. |

Yep, Miss Sassy pants! She just is fun to drive and do some light work with too! She didnt get to many pulls this year. As I only have room for one tractor on my little car hauler. May need to move her up the list for refurb clean and paint after seeing your nice WD45 coming along! Regards, Chris
