Fact of the matter,,,,I was lookin at Walmart online last night,,,and was pleasantly surprised that they sell some 15" trailer taars WITH 6 hole white wheels already mounted up for like $91.66 each,,,,,,,I'm tryin to find out what the bolt pattern is ,,,,who'd a thought,,walmart,,????ClapClap

Main reason I do not like wheel adaptors is bearing wear changes. Usually the adaptor offsets the centerline of the wheel OUT where the outer bearing begins to carry severely higher load than designed for, kind of like being in a perpetual turn or on a perpetual cross grade. Was explained that back in the 70's in Trade School and has held water as fact ever since. If you look at extremely wide wheels they perform the same aspect change and cause premature bearing wear or suspension faults as they place unforeseen stress where it need not be.

I do keep good tars on the trailer I use for work and hauling tractors n such. I just wish I could buy a used 15 for farm trailers and farm equipment that doesn’t see hwy use.

Darrel...yep...I've gone thru 4 vans! the step van I bought on an auction, they said it didn't eun, paid $10. for it, put gas and a battery in and drove it home! it had the 17 inch tires on it. used it for many years doing....uh...well nevermind on that part! then boughts a Dodge Tradesman van, it was already shag carpeted, and a few other things. I was the 4th owner and it had almost 1,000,000,000. miles on it when it finally gave up...that was a FUN van! then came a honest to goodness factory conversion van, still have it! gots a comfy bed and awesum mood lighting in it. starting to rust out a bit. and then the old lady....oooops….I mean the loving wife bought another factory GMC conversion van, it had a stereo in it that would/could/did blow out windows on stores downtown! she sold it several years later to sum boys that wanted that stereo and the room in it to pick up girls! last I knew...it was in SD. on the tire/wheel issues, just wait a few more years, they will come back with the 15,16,17,18 inch rubber again. hey...I just remembered, I have 6 18 inch wheels and tires ona motorhome out back...might look around and maybe find what yer looking for on them, there is always sum parked in the back or in the weeds somewhere.

In '71 I bought a used Econo Line van, engine between the seats, don't remember the year. It had 13" wheels/tires on it.

You did describe the van the same way I was seeing it too.LOL


I have not had much luck with them cheap used tires on implements, darn near everything is radials and not much sidewall no matter how many plys. I get tired mounting and fixing tubes. On hillsides I can roll them off without a tube so most implement tires still get a tube on my stuff.

The difference between a $25 dollar used automotive tire, and an $85 ST-rated trailer tire is...

That the $25 dollar used tire will get replaced seven times before the ST-rated will ever give 'ya trouble.

I'd put ST-rated tires on my work truck, if it wouldn't get me in trouble..  10-ply radials would ride pretty rough, though.  Ive taken the dump trailer to the landfill, and found nails in 'em... that never made it through the plies... just pulled 'em out while the tire laughed.

Don't use adapters, just go online (Champion Trailers, etc) and find a new set of hubs that have the bolt pattern you want.  If they don't have it, it's because it's not a 'trailer' bolt-pattern, and not suitable for the spindle/axle/overhang that you're working with.

Prior note on the adapter's offset is REALLY IMPORTANT... AND... the backspacing of the wheel you're intending on using.  If you offset the tire contact point farther away from the spindle, it dramatically increases the amount of bending moment on the spindle and axle-ends.  Trailer-grade hubs and wheels keep that load in close, so the axle strength is assured.
Ten Amendments, Ten Commandments, and one Golden Rule solve most every problem. Citrus hand-cleaner with Pumice does the rest.

I need to check out hub adapters as I have a 1975 stock trailer with 15 inch wheels an I am not ready to go buy a new aluminum one for $30,000 for some years yet.LOL

I just put new 15" trailer tires on my camper last summer SAMs club has them in stock. They'll ship to your house if you want. If your looking for 10 plies you'll problem need to go 16" wall mart had them in stock mounted on rims. For 10 plies you need to go to 8 bolt wheels. In that case you'll need new axles strong enough for 8 bolt hubs. You can get 10 ply implement tires in both 14 and 15" but implement tires are only rated for 25 mph

Having been the shop manager at a large trailer dealer I learned quite a bit about trailer tires. I will run a used auto tire way before I’ll even consider a cheap new trailer tire.
We sold many a trailer that would return within minutes and they would tell us it was jumping off the ground. The trailer tires would be out of round beyond belief. The only difference between a cheap trailer tire and an auto tire is the flexible sidewalk of the trailer tire. Auto tires go through a much higher standard of quality control.
I’ve also seen very expensive 10 ply trailer tires not make 100 miles empty before blowing out.
At the dealership we had to check every tire for round and side wobble after we mounted it. You would be shocked at how many failed. We learned which brands to trust and which not to trust.

Many people do, but when the DOT man pulls you off the side of the road and pulls out his book... the fun is all over.  In several states, the fine is about 4x the cost of the tires.  Not only is it rare to find an automotive or LT tire in a load range appropriate for a trailer (nobody goes above C nowdays)... the sidewall of an automotive or LT is really flexible, which makes the trailer very susceptible to directional stability problems.
Ten Amendments, Ten Commandments, and one Golden Rule solve most every problem. Citrus hand-cleaner with Pumice does the rest.

I think it all depends on the size of trailer you are talking about. I know in Southern Illinois and Missouri it is VERY COMMON to buy a  16 ft car trailer that has auto tires on it.. The tires are rated about 2200 pounds each (8800# for 4)  and you get a 2000# trailer that holds 6000# vehicle and you get a 8000# plate for it...
 
Now if your talking a 10K or 14 K trailer, that's when you need to go to the TRAILER tires and most of the rims will be 6 or 8 bolt.
