Found a series 3 D17 with this front end. The pivot under the bell housing is welded and looks home made. What should it look like?

Correct for Series 3,but for a diesel.

Sorry, you are incorrect.  A diesel wishbone will not fit under a gas engine (longer than a gasser).  Very late series II was the change to the bigger wishbone.
This is my neighbor`s all original Series III diesel...
