I need near 50 lbs of lead. Just curious how much is in a car battery. I’ve never opened one up. Also looking for other sources.

Thad, yer gonna need to find an Odyssey battery dealer. Them batteries are supposed to be 99% lead. I got a couple of em in my motorhome an they weigh in at 80 pounds a piece. I can let you know in about 15 years when I need to replace em.

I also been making a weight for my pump truck. Been melting them wheel weights down fer about 5 years. Think I got about 10 pounds of lead But I been noticing lately that they must be makin em outa somethng else cause they don't melt like they used to
I still gots my A/C but it's clear out in the barn now.

Years ago I was given a whole bunch of nice clean lead jars. I don’t know what they were fior but I was melting those down to make race car weights. I sold all the weights with the car.
I wondered where I might get a bunch of wheel weights?

Any roofing companies around? Some older houses had lead flashing.

When my dad roofed years ago he had a pile and I took some to school to melt down for shop class when we were in the casting unit. First few batches I brought in were okay. Then had a batch that was folded over and it had some tar in it, stunk the whole school up, school principal was not happy and was told never to bring anymore in.

When I was young and worked in a Gulf service station I use to melt wheel weights down and make fishing weights. Used a small ladle and bought molds for the weights. Easy to do as all trash comes to top when you melt lead

I would stop by Wal Mart TIre Center or local TIre Store and see if you could buy a bucket of USED wheel weights.... scrap lead is approx. $1. pound.

Wheel weights now have a hardner added to the lead. You might find an old plumbing shop that still has some laying on a shelf in the back room.

Find a Plumber who does remodeling. I have a pile of lead drain pipes. At least 3 or 4 hundred pounds of the stuff. Come and get it.
Always figured I would stock pile it to supply the revolution when we will need it to make bullets. Keep waiting for it to happen but it never does, wonder if it ever will.

I’ve got a neighbor who’s a retired plumber. I’ll be visiting him soon.

Will the wheel weights still melt down? I have dimensions for a mold that should be 7 lbs when full of lead. I then need to fill 4” square tube 9” deep. I may fill the tube with scrap or find 4” solid. The 7 lb weight needs to be fairly precise on weight.

They use Antimony or tin as a additive to bind lead and displace the quantity of lead in materials normally found to be just lead.

dangnabit, wish you were closer. I got old style plumber's lead here along with white gas(?) burner and ladle along with a few bars of  body lead ( the original Bondo ).
Seems too good to just scrap, keep thinking someone needs them but man I keep 'reorgnizing' here...tired of that.
I assume lead as you are making 'something' not just a 'weight'?

Both pieces are just a weight. The 7 pounder needs to be a precise 7 pounds. That’s why specific dimensions for the mold. Now I wonder if it must be pure lead to make the weight?

I need to check into that. I know the weight matters and the location point is exact.

Talk to a sports team coach.  They will help you give you all you need.
Haven't you heard the coach say, "Get the lead out".

I believe old windows used lead weights in the wall.  I have a couple here and a couple of those are probably 7#.  Even if they ain't lead they are not that large and have a hole molded into one end.  You could just hang them on a wire or cable.  Look for old abandoned houses.

I have lots of old cast iron window weights. I’ve heard of lead and brass window weights but haven’t found any yet. I’ll be looking.

Thad,
Git you some scuba gear, invite ole Shameless and Dessert Joe (intentional spelling) and go dive for lost fishin lures over there in Beaver lake.  The way I fish, you'll have 50# quick and lots of left over hooks you can sell.

If I remember right I got about a pop can full out of 2 mc and one or two car batts. with a plumbers torch a long long time ago. Cut the top out of the can and it makes a good mold I did learn that much from it.

That’s a good idea cept I don’t want to see ole Shameless swimin. I’d have trouble sleeping if I thought he was that close to here.

scuba weight belts are made to hold lead weights
and they make pellets put in bags to use in pockets.

fishing weights, junk sailboat, medical transport jugs

go to a shooting range and sift behind the targets
