The tractor doesn't look like Allis Chalmers.

They are Allis Chalmers D series. This is outside of the tractor shop #3 in West Allis.

Thats the biggest one I have. Someone said this was a district meeting at the WAW when the D-series first came out. They said this is 1 of 3 photographs taken of the district sales or marketing.

The introduction of the D series would be my guess as well. It is hard to tell but aren't all of the tractors D17's ? I also noticed the muffler and air intake appear to be the same color ?

Judging by the decals I would say the pic is from 59-60 not when they first came out.

My guess is that this was taken sometime in mid 1957. Looks like mostly D-17's.
check out all the LP tractors.

Seeing that picture makes me think of a comment a person made on TV the other night. They said, "The world went to hell when men stopped wearing hats." Looks like this picture was taken in the good days yet!

From the dress, I would say this picture was taken in the late fall or early winter of 1957, as the D17 came out in September of 57.
The man in white, just to the left rear of the man in the dark coat center right front row, may be the dealer from Forreston, Illinois. C.W. (Wally) Johnson.

There are at least 5 LP tractors in the back ground there. I think these are D series as said...some are bigger than others...a couple like D19 on the right back ground...they look bigger. There is probably 60 men there and yes most of them have hats and ties!! |

I believe all the D19 gassers had an oval muffler, that would rule out any of them as being D19's.

Decals on the tractors are all wrong for 1957 if I'm seeing it right. Looks like 59' or 60' like someone else said earlier. I think in late 1960 or 1961 the wheels went to cream.

Guys, you may have done this already, but if you are browsing using Firefox, the following steps may help you see the details of the picture a little better:
1) Right-click over the picture 2) Select "View Image" (The image will open in a new tab) 3) Use <CTRL>+ (Control plus) and <CTRL>- to zoom in and out of the picture. Internet Explorer has a zoom capability, but the results are not as useful IMHO. The tractors are definitely not all D-17s. If you look at the very left side of the picture, the tires have a different tread and the shape of the fender is different than the Series I D-17 on the right. Beyond that, I'm reading this column along with the rest of you guys to learn what I can. |

Only difference I see is the LH propane tractors have rice/cane tires. All look to be 17's to me. Tried to see if the steering wheel was early metal-spoke type or black plastic, but can't see that well. I vote for Series II in 59 or 60 as they have the wider drawbar bail.

The closest tractor on the left definitely has a wide bail. All the steering wheels I can see appear to be black plastic with a triangle of lighter color( chromed?) in the middle. The closets tractor on the right doesn't appear to have that center piece.

I was wrong thinking it was 1957. I agree that these are black bar tractors so very likely in the fall of 1959.
