Hello. Just got my new carb link spring from Sandy Lake and installed...
problem..Even at idle position, engine runs fast..no speed control.
I've attached the spring onto the #2 manifold stud ( from front)...
Any ideas where I've screwed up this time !

I just compared setup to my 57 D-14, the 59 has a 'plug of plastic?' inside the govenor spring but the 57 doesn't.
Changed carbs while I'm watching the rain come down, and without the carb link spring I can idle,mid range,fast speed real nice. As soon as I put the spring on , it goes full throttle as the spring pulls the carb linkage forward towards the rad.
Sure hope someone can help. It has tons of power,pull 3 bottom plow great...

As i recall from my D14, the spring went toward the rear. Have you tried that?

Chuck, that might be the choke return spring you are referring to. The anti surge spring should go upwards. Try it on stud #3 from the front. It should not have much tension on it.

It has to go towards the back. If it is hooked to #2 then it would have to pull the throttle open I would think. This spring is just the anti surge spring and does not need to have much tension on it. Order a D15 Series 2 govenor spring for it and you will see a noticable improvement in performance. Actually it may already have one. The original D14 spring will be made from a lot lighter wire than the D15 series 2.JP

Sounds like you have more than a spring problem. You might want to take the cover off the governor and have a look at the weights and arm.

The spring should have little tension and it shouldn't pull forward or backward but pretty much straight up. If it leans forward or backward, it isn't by much.

It now makes sense where that spring is supposed to be.Itty bitty thing and I've never seen a real official picture of it properly installed.Both '57 and '59 D-14s had huge springs fastned in different spots!
Now to get it fixed before the wife wants 'her' garage back to put the car in,'ol man Winter's coming soon !

Got her running great again ! Although I couldn't find what to tie the other end of the spring to as the exhaust part of the manifold is right above, so I looped it around the block draincock spigot thing behind the carb.
Also installed the opmeter from Sandy Lake today as well..
Started to snow too...
Guess 2 out of 3 is good!
