CA Rear Axle Seal Project

 

 

So here she is in all her glory.

 

you can see the oil leaking from the "mouse holes"    (still haven't really figured out what these holes are for)

Also - you may notice that these are the wrong seals .... I didn't find that out until we had the whole rear end apart - luckily my local equipment store had two on hand (I really lucked out on that)

 

 

First step was to drain the rear end.

 

 

 

Then remove the rear fenders, seat, and everything in between.  My old man was nice enough to come out and give me a hand.

 

 

 

 

 

Everything off minus the lift arms.

 

 

 

Lift arms come off - then block the rear end and jack up the first axle to remove the rear tire. 

 

 

 

Used the shop crane to lift the rear Axle.   NOTE:  the service manual made no mention of removing the hand clutch lever in order to get the final drive out.   It actually made no mention of the hand clutch at all.  According to the service manual, the final drive should have just pulled away from the tractor as one piece.  Turns out that the hand clutch lever needed to be removed prior to the rear axle coming off, then the hand clutch it self needed to be removed before we could get to the seal.

The rear axle after the hand clutch was removed,  the seal is inside the wheel bearing that is still attached at this point.

 

 

After the axle and wheel bearing are removed.

 

 

Reassembled and onto the other side.  Replacing the seal was easy (sorry no pictures, I was caught up in the moment and forgot)

 

 

Axle came off easy enough ( this side when much quicker after doing the more complicated side first )

 

 

They're called "mouse holes"  but I feel like they could be referred to as "squirrel holes "

all put back together -- the whole project was fast and easy.  I thought it'd be a much larger job but we had it all wrapped up before the day was done.
