Awhile back I had some questions concerning my CA leaking oil from the rear axles.  The nice folks on this forum were kind enough to grace me with their knowledge, and it turned out that both my rear inner axle seals were leaking.  So I set out to solve said problem.

So here she is in all her glory.

you can see the oil leaking from the "mouse holes"    (still haven't really figured out what these holes are for)

Close up of the leak

Thanks Stiener Tractors for the Cow Tails Smile
Also - you may notice that these are the wrong seals .... I didn't find that out until we had the whole rear end apart - luckily my local equipment store had two on hand (I really lucked out on that)

First step was to drain the rear end.

Then remove the rear fenders, seat, and everything in between.  My old man was nice enough to come out and give me a hand.

Everything off minus the lift arms.

Lift arms come off - then block the rear end and jack up the first axle to remove the rear tire.

Used the shop crane to lift the rear Axle.   NOTE:  the service manual made no mention of removing the hand clutch lever in order to get the final drive out.   It actually made no mention of the hand clutch at all.  According to the service manual, the final drive should have just pulled away from the tractor as one piece.  Turns out that the hand clutch lever needed to be removed prior to the rear axle coming off, then the hand clutch it self needed to be removed before we could get to the seal.

The hand clutch

The rear axle after the hand clutch was removed,  the seal is inside the wheel bearing that is still attached at this point.

After the axle and wheel bearing are removed.

Reassembled and onto the other side.  Replacing the seal was easy (sorry no pictures, I was caught up in the moment and forgot)

Axle came off easy enough ( this side when much quicker after doing the more complicated side first )

They're called "mouse holes"  but I feel like they could be referred to as "squirrel holes "

Removing the wheel bearing

all put back together -- the whole project was fast and easy.  I thought it'd be a much larger job but we had it all wrapped up before the day was done.

Sorry for the lack of pictures - I was a little preoccupied and forgot on multiple occasions to take some.  Thanks again to everyone who pointed me in the right direction.

Great job!

The "mouse holes" are to drain water out that comes in through the opening for the brake levers on top...

...and to let the squirrels in.

Yep she has marked her spot on the floor that she has been there, and to remind you how much you love her. Wink Good job, especially with all the surprises trying to set ya back.

SGTJ,
Thanks for some insight into the world of the CA machines! Glad your Dad was able to help you need to get him something real nice for Fathers day!

That's definitely true !  He restored a John Deere B last summer, and this winter the roof caved in on his shed -- I might have to get him some new tin as a thank you LOL

Seeing those photos takes me back to my CA hand clutch/brake project! Stripping it down to the seat frame is a pretty good chore all by itself. Engine crane comes in mighty handy at that point, especially if the tires are loaded. Nice work getting it all done in one day!
