Great info ! I was told by a guy who worked for the Ontario A-C industral dealer that the V-8 was tested in the HD-41 and would grenade at about 1000 hours. No mention of testing the V-8 in Norm's books. Sam T tells of a V-8 in the Georgia branch that A-C suddenly wanted returned. I guess I'll have to get a little more serious about getting a V-12. Know of two for sale.

The V-12 with the intercooler was rated at 900 Hp so the V-8 should have been good for close to 600 Hp. The HD-41 with the cummins V-12 is 524Hp so the V-8 should have got the job done. |

you never want to pull the max rated hp out of a engine, the rated 600hp was intermintent rating.you need some cushion.just like the hd21&945 loader the engines were 300hp and 315hp in the 945 (25000).the v12 cummins (1710ci)could make alot more than 525hp,but you need some longevity.they could of used the v8 in the hd31(425hp)that came out in 76? Mr Zagotta an engineer that worked on the v series told me they should of never played with the v8 version, they were a 60 degree block and that it was hard to balance.they had to use two counter balancers spinning twice the rpm of the crankshaft.the balancers failed prematurely.at the end they re engineered the balancers, but corporate thought the v12 was a better product.

i met with mr. Baklin chief engineer on the v series engines.we talked for a couple hours,my ears were glued to his every word!!he has a filing cabinet filled with drawings, data, pictures ect.that he willing to donate to the rumley-allis heritage museum-coming soon to laporte, indiana.he was the last engineer at harvey-to clean&dispose papers.he gave me a picture of the last engine off the line in 1986 a 426.they almost had a deal selling the v12 engine to cummins in 1986,but cummins backed out.they were working on two experimental engines the model 9010 90 degree v series (v8-v12).4 turbochargers compounded and intercooled(300mbe)output.1cylinder running prototype.model 688 inline series 300hp.stay tuned i might be able to show some drawings of these engines.
